Synopsis

The Trolls debate on what to put in Branch's time capsule invention, then Cooper buries the empty capsule.

Plot
[]

It is sunrise on another day at Troll Village and Poppy greets the village. She has some minor announcements to make. Firstly, there have been accidents related to Jetpack Critters. She also warns of too much exposure to the sun in their recent good weather as it is not good for their health.

She then gets onto the real reason the village is gathered: she has recently commissioned Branch to make her something. After several long months, Branch has made his latest and greatest creation, but he hypes it up and doesn't get on with the presentation, with Smidge yelling at him to get on with it. He reveals his creation and DJ Suki calls it an "uninspiring piñata". He corrects them and explains it is a time capsule; you put a beloved item in it and bury it. Cooper misinterpretates it as a funeral for their favorite things and finds that morbid, so Poppy steps in and explains it s a way to make friends with Trolls of the future by leaving them something that reflects who they are. The Trolls are excited by the prospect of making friends with future Trolls. Poppy goes to put a scrapbook in the capsule, but Branch questions if that is the best choice, asking the crowd if they want to put a gem inside, proving a point that the crowd of Trolls will agree with every suggestion Poppy makes.

Poppy forms a committee to make a choice while Cooper forms a committee to bury it. The first Troll to step in is Klaus Von Frosting, who proposes cupcakes, but Poppy envisions the moldy cakes offending the Trolls from the future. DJ suggests a record of their favorite songs, but Poppy sees them having problems understanding how ancient technology works. DJ considers putting a means to play the record also in, but Poppy still sees the future Trolls having issues with playing the device. King Peppy suggests wooden carvings, but after a splinter Poppy imagines the future Trolls will believe the past Trolls hate them for giving them splinters. Guy Diamond suggests that they give them a taste of the latest craze Jetpack Critters.

Eventually, she runs out of suggestions and Branch says they have plenty of good ideas. The Trolls are just too paranoid about how they will be received. Poppy states that she would rather put nothing in, then offend the future Trolls and take a break. Unfortunately, Cooper misinterprets her words.

When they get back, they find Cooper has buried the Capsule without putting an item in. Out of fear of the empty capsule offending the future Trolls, Poppy wants to find it and dig it up, but Cooper can't remember where he buried it. She begins a village-wide search, but eventually the digging causes mayhem and she calls off the search, confessing that she was excited about the prospect of making friends with Trolls of the future, but not at the cost of Troll Village. Poppy and Branch talk about the loss of the capsule, but Branch says that they are Trolls, so they will get it.

In the future, a pair of Future Trolls find the capsule, and though are confused at first, they realize that the past Trolls have given them a gift: the time capsule, so they can make friends with Trolls of the future. They talk about what to put in it and go for a scrapbook, commenting how that was easy to decide.

Trivia
[]

  • "Queen Poppy had a cupcake she put it on a shelf, Branch said he wanted some..." is a rather strange poem for the Trolls to sing while playing jump rope. The poem is likely a reference to "The K-i-s-s-i-n-g Song", given how it was sung. The song goes "[name] and [name], sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G, first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby's carriage". In the episode, the poem cuts off before it can go any further with the song, but is probably a nod to Branch and Poppy's relationship.
    • It's worth noting that the issue with Trolls: The Beat Goes On! in general was its inability to change the status quo on the pair's relationship, remaining as it was at the end of Trolls and Trolls Holiday. This was one of many episodes referencing their relationship.
  • This episode confirms the second of only two time frames for the series (the first being confirmed in "Sorry Not Sorry"); though no specific time is mentioned, it takes place many months after the events of Trolls.
  • Until the Trolls: TrollsTopia episode "The Makeunder", it was unknown what "A.B." meant; in said episode, Branch explained that it stands for "after bunker". This would mean the Future Trolls will open the time capsule 3235 years after Branch went into his bunker for the first time, which in turn means they open it 3225 years after the events of Trolls.
  • A "Time Capsule" is a container or object that hosts a number of objects of importance from the past, providing a treasure trove of information on life in the era upon which it was buried. This can be anything such as a rock that hosts a large number of fossils of creatures from a particular point of time such as a seafloor, or a buried vase or box that happens to contain someone's daily shopping.
    • In the 20th century, the idea became popularised to purposely bury items in the ground in the hope someone else would find them, thus purpose-made Time capsules were placed in the ground. A chest or box would be filled with items that represented the time of the capsule's burial, such as journals, toys, clothes, jewelry, or even unopened packages of food. The idea was so that someone in the future would find the capsule and learn about those who buried the capsule, leaving a story or legacy for another.
