When Poppy finds out about the existence of "BPF"s ("Best Pet Friends") she's determined to meet a cuddly pal all her own. But it turns out finding your pet soulmate may be tougher than she thought.

Plot

Holly is filled with excitement to show off the most adorable thing she's ever seen, and shows Poppy her pet Pigtail, which causes Poppy to faint at Pigtail's adorableness. Holly explains that since she's now settled in TrollsTopia, she sent off for her "Best Pet Friend" or "BPF". Poppy is not familiar with the concept, since Pop Trolls don't really keep pets. Even Biggie denies Mr. Dinkles that is a pet before the worm throws a frisbee for Biggie to chase after and catch like a dog. Poppy just thinks a BPF is a Country Troll thing. Though she is immediately proven wrong; all of the other TrollsTopia council members have BPFs. Val shows off her pet snake, Fang, who is trying to squeeze the air out of her with a leer, but Val (oblivious to Fang’s intentions) just states that they call those his "love hugs”. Fang then tries to bite her finger off, but Val just continues nuzzling his face. Poppy is excited and wants a BPF of her own, but doesn't know how to find one.

Val and Holly introduce Poppy to Perky the Grinchilla. Perky and Poppy are a perfect match and Poppy takes her home, but when Poppy goes to feed her, she turns around and sees Perky destroying a Scrapbook.

Poppy is seen crying in front of Holly and Val that it was a BPF disaster. Val offers her Fang, who has swallowed half her arm, prompting Poppy to deny her offer. They ensure her that there are other potential BPFs out there. Poppy goes on a picnic with a bird, but it quickly ends when the bird states that hugs are signs of emotional weakness and are inferior to a firm handshake. Poppy then meets up with a Grossum, but it ends up falling asleep on her since it's nocturnal. And finally, when Poppy is just getting close to different bird, it has to fly south for the winter.

Poppy's failures are all labeled BPF disasters, and Poppy begins to doubt she’ll ever find the right one. Though Holly and Val try to offer support, Poppy sadly states that her BPF is not just going to pop out of nowhere. However, Poppy instantly meets a turtle named Shelliot, whom she was sitting on thinking he was a rock. Poppy is instantly smitten and asks Shelliot if he wants to fetch a stick, but realizes that turtles don't play fetch. Shelliot then literally sweeps Poppy off her feet, telling her he’ll make the plans for the two of them. Shelliot turns out to be the perfect BPF material; he is reliable and protects Poppy, keeping her company.

Convinced Shelliot is the match for her, Poppy eventually decides to ask him to be her BPF. However, Poppy is shocked and horrified to find out that Shelliot has met and befriended Branch, who is joyfully playing fetch with the turtle. Poppy calls Shelliot out for this; Branch is confused and Poppy is clearly upset, explaining “turtles don’t play fetch or so I was led to believe,” causing Shelliot to pop his head into his shell in shame. Branch explains they met and the pair just clicked like they have some sort of connection. Realizing that Shelliot has something with Branch that he didn’t have with her, Poppy runs off upset.

Poppy is by Val and Holly, calling her ventures complete failures. While she eats ice cream, she believes she will never find a BPF and that she is doomed to be an old cat lady but without cats. While crying, Poppy reveals that Perky's "BPF Disaster" was that she ate a Scrapbook, which confuses Holly and Val as she never mentioned that. This makes Val, Holly, and even Pigtail and Fang laugh. Poppy is confused, but Holly explains that Pigtail has destroyed many of Holly's belongings. Val says that she sometimes gets a feeling that Fang only wants to eat her (at the time, he's halfway in the process of swallowing her whole). Holly tells Poppy that there's no such thing as the perfect BPF, and it's all down to if they are perfect for each other.

At her home, Perky is eating ice cream, still upset by Poppy's abandonment. She hears music and when she peers outside, Poppy is there playing a song on a boombox. Seeing Poppy, Perky repairs the scrapbook and shows it to Poppy. The two immediately cuddle and make up. Holly comments on how sweet the display is, while Fang has managed to swallow Val completely whole.

Trivia
[]

  • The joke "Mr___ was my father's name" was previously used in the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode "Funishment" by Nangus Skullcrusher.
  • The scene where Poppy holds up a boombox is a reference to the film Say Anything.... This reference previously happened in the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode "Sorry Not Sorry".
  • Poppy's behavior in the episode is based on an example of a bad pet owner. Pets often come with responsiblities and can be quite a life-changing event, with a lot of these new owners wanting a perfect pet and being disappointed with the pet they pick up not living up to expectations. When the pet plays up, these owners soon abandon them for another pet, even when the pet's behavior is not unreasonable at all.
  • In 3D animation and the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode "Dinkles Dinkles Little Star", Mr. Dinkles is said to be a pet, but here Biggie denies it.
  • The phrase Poppy speaks to Perky "they say when two people can share..." is a reference to the belief that a couple in a relationship are at their best point when both are comfortable sharing a fart with each other. The full phrase is "they say when two people can share a comfortable fart with each other", implying it no longer bothers them what their partner does.
