Trolls: The Beat Goes On! (also listed as DreamWorks Trolls: The Beat Goes On!) is an American animated television series that serves as an adaptation of the film Trolls, and the first TV series in the DreamWorks Trolls franchise. Produced by DreamWorks Animation, it aired from January 19, 2018 to November 22, 2019 on Netflix, with two web mini-series titled ASK POPPY and Trolls: Pump up the Party!. It was succeeded by Trolls: TrollsTopia.

The series was trademarked by DreamWorks on February 28, 2017.[1]

About
[]

Pre-premiere

In 2013, Netflix and DreamWorks made a deal to bring 300 hours of animated content to the service provide from movies Shrek, Madagascar and Trolls.[2] The name "DreamWorks Trolls: Cupcakes and Rainbows" was filed as a trademark on December 3, 2014; it seems to have been the series' working title.

Trolls: The Beat Goes On! was scheduled to premiere on January 19, 2018, to be released on Netflix. The official trailer of the series was released on December 12, 2017. The announcement came alongside with other DreamWorks' TV series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, The Boss Baby: Back in Business, Harvey Street Kids, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants and 3Below: Tales of Arcadia.[3]

Post-premiere & Ending

The series premiered on January 19, 2018 on Netflix. The series, while having its own canonical storyline, isn't part of the Trolls franchise's major storyline, and is simply based upon the events of the Trolls movie.

James Zahn of The Rock Father confirmed that there would be a second season of the series,[4] which was released on March 9, 2018 and consists of 7 episodes.[5] The third season with 6 episodes was released on August 24, 2018,[6] the fourth season with 7 episodes on November 2, 2018,[7] the fifth season with 6 episodes on January 18, 2019,[8] the sixth season with 6 episodes on April 9, 2019,[9] the seventh season with 7 episodes on August 27, 2019,[10] and the eighth and final season with 7 episodes on November 22, 2019.[11]

The episodes are typically 22 minutes long, and usually consist of two 11-minute separate stories.

The show had two promotional web mini-series aired alongside it, titled ASK POPPY and Trolls: Pump Up the Party!.

On January 16, 2020, it was announced that a new Trolls series titled Trolls: TrollsTopia will be released on the streaming service Hulu, as well as the then-upcoming service Peacock. This series will be taking over from Trolls: The Beat Goes On! and cover the events of Trolls World Tour, thus bringing to an end the coverage of projects on Trolls, and in turn the eventual ending of this show.

Like most other TV series produced by DreamWorks, Trolls: The Beat Goes On! fits within the related canon storyline of Trolls, but isn't considered canonical to the overall franchise's storyline, with the later Trolls World Tour movie ignoring it completely. This is acknowledged by the staff, who are aware that fans don't consider the show canon, and it seems that no Season 9 was ever planned.[12] It was mentioned later that when Trolls World Tour started production, the show was on the Party Crashers arc. This caused a temporary pause in their storyline, as Trolls World Tour was supposed to reveal the existence of other Troll Tribes. The Party Crashers interfered with that concept, and to avoid confusion they made one of its named members, Archer Pastry, claim that they're distantly related to the Bergens.[13]

Synopsis
[]

Join Poppy, Branch and all of Troll Village as they keep the dance party raving in their fantastical forest home. Picking up where the blockbuster film left off, the Trolls are quickly adjusting to a life of cohabitation with those grumpy Bergens. Bursting with their signature positivity and a whole lotta music, Trolls: The Beat Goes On! opens up the colorful world of Trolls for new adventures and a dance party around every corner!

As Queen Poppy celebrates a time of peace in Troll Village with parties, competitions and special occasions, Branch tries to be more fun-loving.

Plot
[]

Picking up where the film left off, the series follows the everyday lives of the Trolls, and is very "slice of life"-themed. Many episodes start off with Queen Poppy explaining a particular event occurring in an episode. Branch is often also used as a means to explain to the audience what's going on, providing a secondary narrative for a episode's events.[14]

In "Sorry Not Sorry", it's confirmed that Season 2 of the show takes place one month after the Trolls movie. This canonically puts the season at a similar time to Trolls Holiday, which takes place at least four weeks after the movie. Season 8 is later confirmed in "BFFF" to have taken place many months after Trolls.

Subplots[]

The series has a few ongoing subplots and story arcs within itself that are spread out across the seasons. These arcs mostly focus on The Snack Pack aside from Cooper and Fuzzbert, who never had an arc of their own in the series. Many of the subplots didn't become apparent until later seasons.

Focus Description
The Bergens Geneally their storyline was mostly only centered around Seasons 1 and 2 of the show and by Season 3, they had stopped being referenced except in a few episodes. But the main plot of the first 2 seasons was how the Trolls and Bergens were getting along in a new era of freedom.
Poppy as Queen Throughout the series, Poppy has to learn how to fix her mistakes. There are some mini-arcs tied into this. Poppy has several episodes where she has to learn what limits a leader should have. These include "Royal Review", "Bellow Bug Day" and "Blank Day". Her new rulership included various lessons such as in "Funishment", Poppy learns that sometimes she has to actually punish bad behavior in a way that fits her. "Haircuffed" is also included in this. In "The Giver", Poppy has to keep the identity of the Giver in order to respect Branch's wishes.
The Party Crashers A storyline that starts at the end of Season 2 ("The Party Games" & "Pillow War"), carries over throughout Season 3 ("The Imposter", "The Frenemy", "Trolly Tales 2" & "Lost In The Woods") and concludes at the beginning of Season 4 ("Party Crashed") involves dealing with this group. It's the longest major arc subplot in the entire series.
Branch Over the course of the seasons, Branch slowly betters his character and becomes a normal Troll again, or as normal as he can be. Parts of his arc included "Fun Branch", where while trying to prove he can be fun, Branch goes overboard. "Eye'll Be Watching You" and "Hug Fest" are included in this. These episodes also focus on Branch learning how to improve himself as a Troll. In "Creek Week", Branch has to either learn how to forgive Creek for the events of Trolls or remain alone. In "Mr. Glittercakes", Branch learns that his friends will understand if he wants to spend time alone. Episodes that mark Branch's overall development milestones as a Troll include "Gem Day" and "Bye Bye Bunker".
Branch and Poppy The pair become close friends over the course of the series, with Poppy helping Branch with his own character arc and being the main lease on the more extremities of his character, and Branch helping Poppy with hers slowly becoming more and more the voice of reason.
Satin & Chenille The twins become better fashion designers by progressively becoming Nova Swift's interns. Episodes involving this include "Model Behavior", "The Interns" and "Vega Swift".
DJ Suki DJ Suki has a minor arc with her niece CJ Suki, wherein she's either teaching CJ to be a better Troll or learning to be a better role model for her niece. Episodes with this storyline include "DJ's Got Talent", "Troll Rangers" and "CJ's Wooferbug".
Guy Diamond Guy's arc mostly focuses on relying in his pride and learning how to make others look good. Episodes with this arc include "Glitter Loss" and "The Partier's Apprentice".
Biggie Biggie's arc is learning to be a braver Troll. Episodes included in this are "The Poppy Horror Picture Show", "Remote Out Of Control" and "Truth or Dare".
Smidge and Milton Moss Smidge has an ongoing relationship with Milton Moss throughout the series. Episodes focused on this include "Crushin' It", "Hair Ball" and "To Catch A Critter".
Trolly Tales A series of episodes that involve Trolls telling fictional stories. Each of them is titled "Trolly Tales", plus an order number.

Past Animation References
[]

Even though the series isn't considered canon to past 3D media, it makes a number of references to them.

Trolls[]

  • The introduction of "A New Bergen-ing" recaps the movie, while "Laugh Out Cloud" has many of the movie's jokes based around Cloud Guy.
  • "Sorry Not Sorry" mentions that Bridget and King Gristle Jr. have been dating for one month, and ate pizza at their date. This puts the episode about when Trolls Holiday would have been also occurring.
  • Peppy mentions in "Meet The Peppy" that Branch saved the village by singing a song.
  • In "Fluffleberry Quest", Branch mentions that his grandma used to make Fluffleberry cake and that if he ate the last slice it would be gone forever. This is, of course, a callback to the fact he was responsible for her death.
  • In "A Flower For Poppy", Branch mentioned losing his favorite toy in the escape from Bergen Town, affirming that he was present in the escape. His presence in the escape was never confirmed in Trolls, despite him being old enough to take part in the event. He is seen inside the cage around the Troll Tree when Rosiepuff was taken, so it is presumable he was in the escape.

Trolls Holiday[]

  • In "Branch Bum", the scene of the Caterbus falling in a wormhole is a reference to the Love Train scene in Trolls Holiday.

Trolls World Tour[]

  • In "Bye Bye Bunker", Branch gets his Hug-Time Bracelet seen in Trolls World Tour. He was seen before with another bracelet, but this one was used for timekeeping, and never for hug time.

Errors and Contradictions
[]

  • In "Fluffleberry Quest", despite the fact that Branch's reason for not being able to get another slice of Fluffleberry cake is referenced, there's issues with "how" the cake was made in the first place. By the events of Trolls, the Trolls had been completely surrounded by Bergen Town, making it hard for his grandma to get some some of the ingredients on the list.
  • Branch is shown as a child flying a kite in "Bringing Up Birdy". If this is set before "Grandma Rosiepuff" died, he shouldn't be this out in the open through fear of getting captured by a Bergen. If this is after the Trolls' escape, then he should be grey like in the movie.
  • In "Fun Branch", Branch's father is partly seen. However, this took place before Trolls Band Together which confirmed that he had no other family prior to the events of Trolls before BroZone and Grandma Rosiepuff when he was a baby and that event took place after he was a baby. John Dory also mentions raising his four brothers (Branch, Spruce, Clay and Floyd) on his own.

As a side note, while the Bergens appear in early seasons quite commonly, they become more and more absent as the series progresses. The series focuses more on the Trolls, and Season 6 ignores the Bergens completely. They are mentioned in Seasons 7 and 8 despite this, and King Gristle Jr. appears in "Extreme Sleepover Club" and "Queen of the Castle" (albeit in a non-speaking role).

Success and Critical Response
[]

Most feedback to the series come from fans of the Trolls franchise, due to the series being on a streaming and thus having limited access for few critics and reviewers to respond to the series. The series was fairly well-received in general, but had a number of issues that developed over time.

Overall

The show had yet to recieve a rating on Rotten Tomatoes by 2021.[15] Some of the criticism was directed at the 11-minute runtime, which meant stories had to be condensed down and to the point, but this rarely came at the expense to the story overall and most of the series' jokes didn't suffer as a result of the limited runtime.

Character Appearances

Poppy and Branch were noted to at times barely be like their 3D counterparts. For Branch, it was a number of underlining issues such as Branch's appearance being notably different to the 3D design. One of the animators, Jim Mortensen, explained that his different ears were used likely because the pointy ones didn't look good in 2D animation;[16] likewise, his green coloration was also chosen because of how it looked.[17] For Branch, while in 3D animation he had been a cautious Troll, but otherwise aided greatly the plot of Trolls, here he was reduced to a grump who was often made to look bad for the sake of story plot; though the series did explain that he was re-learning to be a Troll again and he had a long struggle against him. Skylar Astin later confirmed his Branch had been written to match his performance rather than Justin Timberlake, this confirmed there were purposely written differences between characters in the 3D movies and 2D TV series, with Skylar being asked not to match Justin's performance at all.[18]

However, the rest of the Snack Pack didn't get the same level of criticism due to the limited role they had in Trolls, thus had little personalities displayed within the movie. The series went more in-depth with each member, expanding their character. However, it didn't always follow the Trolls descriptions of the characters; for example, in his Trolls bio, Guy Diamond is described as "popular but not pompous", yet in the series his vanity and pride as a Glitter Troll contradicts this.

The Bergens were notable in the first few seasons, but by Season 8 were barely mentioned at all. After the story plot involving them, the Party Crashers likewise disappeared completely from the storyline, though this was explainable because of the conflict they had with Trolls World Tour storyline, as it had been the reason their story was delayed completion to begin with.

The episodes have featured numerous one-off characters like Baha, Meadow Spriggs and Marshtato Mary, though the latter two have since returned in the follow-up series Trolls: TrollsTopia. The show did still introduce many new regular characters like Nova Swift and Sky Toronto, with Nova making an appearance in the Trolls Pop app game and Sky being reused for Trolls: TrollsTopia. Some of the characters also saw major useage related to the series and thus appeared outside it. Due to Guy Diamond's popularity in merchandise, Gia Grooves was often used in merchandise as his female counterpart. However, Bella Brightly was one of the few Trolls to transfer over from the Trolls: Crazy Party Forest! app and had some minor appearences in the series. One area of note is that many movie characters did not appear in the series. For example, of the 4 pre-movie characters Karma never made it into the series with Aspen Heitz, Maddy and Cybil (who had an entirely different design to her movie counterpart) did but were not well developed. The 3 post-movie characters Cookie Sugarloaf, Mandy Sparkledust and Moxie Dewdrop never appeared in the series either.

Story

The main negativity towards stories aimed at a were centered around a number of plot formulas that became noticeable over time. For example, one such formula that was noted was Poppy and Branch entering a competition that Branch was ultimately fated to lose regardless of what he did, and often was based on his smugness and bragging about himself. In "Peril Patch", this formula was even noted by Smidge within the episode's story as a reoccurence; ironically, that particular episode is the only one where Branch technically "wins".

Another formula that got a lot more negative criticism was Cloud Guy, who in most of his appearances would show up, cause hassle for Branch and then leave with no consequences for his behavior. Poppy messing up as a leader and having to fix a problem she caused was a common one as well. When Creek showed up for a major episode, it was ultimately always at conflict with Branch, and he had almost no interactions with other Trolls or members of the Snack Pack besides Poppy, who even still was only there to relate to his conflict with Branch. Many of these formulas would continue into Trolls: TrollsTopia with variable amounts of criticism for their return.

The most criticized episode was "Creek Week", which re-introduced Creek to the series from Trolls. The general criticism was that Creek had been allowed back in the village too easily and that he hadn't received a consequence proportional for his betrayal in Trolls, with Branch being pushed as the "bad guy" for the episode. The general consensus was the episode was poorly written, and Creek's return needed more time. Despite his return in the series, Creek didn't return to 3D media and is still considered officially dead in the canon storyline.

The Party Crashers storyline is generally considered one of the best recieved storylines within the show.

Trivia
[]

  • Most of the animation in the series is of a traditional 2D style instead of the computer-animated hybrid 3D style used in the films.
  • Many of the original actors did not reprise their roles from the film. Cooper, Cloud Guy, and Fuzzbert are the only characters who share the same voice actors as they did in Trolls.
  • A number of the line references in the series were put up by one of the animators.[22]
  • Boom Da Party, Won't Stop and Swagnificent appeared and heard in the series, these songs originally came from All Hail King Julien, another TV series by DreamWorks Animation for the Madagascar franchise.
  • Overall, the series had 5 title card backgrounds for its episodes, each to a correspondent season:
    • The first one features a Troll hair-like spiral, and was used in Seasons 1 and 2.
    • The second one shows a hill with two small plants. It was used in Season 3.
    • The third one depicts another hill with a number of mushrooms. It was used in Season 4, except for the episodes "Three Trolls-Keteers" and "The Helper", which had the previous background instead.
    • The fourth one depicts a series of pods hanging from trees. It was used in Seasons 5 and 6.
    • The fifth one has yet another hill, but with a pond-like nature. It was used in Seasons 7 and 8.
  • "Party Crashed", the first episode of Season 4, is the only episode in the series that doesn't have two separate stories.
  • Starting with "Fun Branch" and regularly happening by Season 5, a running gag in the series involves making a reference to the common classic cartoon rule of "gravity does not work until you look down", which was made infamous by the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. The gag occurred in 13 episodes so far, with two of them ("Scrapbookmobile" and "What Did I Miss?") having it happening twice.[23][24] This gag continued with Trolls: TrollsTopia.
  • Most of the episodes make cultural references to a number of media, including their titles. The most common are those of movies and other TV series.
  • In the UK television airing of the series on POP TV, the series has issues with pitching and many voices and music have been slightly pitched up. This continues even onto the channels YouTube clips.
  • Some of the early Trolls from Trolls: Crazy Party Forest! and the Trolls Magazine made it into the series but most did not. The ones that made it were; Rufus (be it redesigned) and Bella Brightly. The families (later referred to as "sub tribes") from that era mostly did not make it into the animation, but the series refers to Glitter Trolls and Fuzzling Trolls by their family name.
