"Gary", also shortened to "Gar" by Branch, is the nickname given to a remote controller belonging to Branch, which appears in Trolls: The Beat Goes On! on a regular basis and furthermore in Trolls: TrollsTopia.

Appearance
[]

The remote has various buttons on it that make it resemble a face somewhat.

Personality
[]

Similar to Biggie & Mr. Dinkles, Branch sometimes projects onto Gary certain traits. In Trolls: TrollsTopia, it was shown that Gary has started to acquire a bit more of a personality via Branch's projections. He is portrayed as lazy in "Clash of the Battle Piñatas" for example.

The only time he, himself unaided, showed any personality was in Branch's dream in "Branchception" where he tries to act as a wide-eyed young kid who admires Branch. When Branch realizes that he has to escape the dream by giving himself a shock, the only way he thinks of doing that is to smash Gary. At this point Gary tries to plead with Branch who has to remind himself this version of Gary isn't real. Since this was all a dream, however, Gary's personality wasn't cemented.

Relationships
[]

Branch[]

Branch treats the remote as his "son" and hence not only gendered it as male but named it "Gary".

Skills and Abilities
[]

Branch uses it to activate traps around Troll Village to protect his fellow Trolls. While not all of Branch's traps are activated by Gary, he hosts a fair number of major ones.

History
[]

Trolls: The Beat Goes On![]

Gary's origins are never explained, but it appears from the very beginning of the series in "A New Bergen-ing". Branch had laid traps around the village to catch any Bergen who attempted to eat a Troll and thus prove that the Bergens haven't changed their ways. Poppy ends up using the device to catch all Trolls and Bergens except Branch, King Gristle Jr., Bridget and herself after a misunderstanding causes panic among both species, to which Branch claims that Gary had become a man.

In "Remote Out Of Control", Smidge, Cooper, Guy Diamond and Biggie took Gary for a joyride without Branch's permission while he was out of Troll Village with Poppy visiting Bergen Town. While Biggie was tagging along for the ride, the other three Trolls had the idea after Branch saved Smidge using Gary to activate safety measures in order to protect her. As shown also in the episode, Branch tends to be overprotective of his "son" and will go to great lengths to find Gary.

Due to the large number of traps that Branch has installed around the village, Gary had become the village's only safety measure and weapon by the time of "Party Crashed" when the Party Crashers turned up. When the Party Crashers took Mr. Dinkles hostage, Branch was unable to use the device without risk of hurting the worm. Archer Pastry attempted to convince Branch to hand over Gary to him, and it was only because of Poppy that Branch did. But it took a lot for Branch to give the device, as he was prepared to fight Archer over it.

Trolls: TrollsTopia[]

In Trolls: TrollsTopia, Gary is given a lot more personification, despite being an inanimate object. In "It's Dad-urday", Gary somehow tossed a ball at Branch in a game of catch. In "Clash of the Battle Piñatas", Branch comments that Gary wasn't much of a teammate, having never helped lift anything. When criticizing the remote, Gary is shown chilling on a lounge chair drinking.

Trivia
[]

  • Gary's origin is mentioned by Branch in the non-canonical book Trolls Mad Libs, where he states "Before I designed you, the world was ____ and Scary".
    • However, due to the nature of the book, it is not only not considered the actual origin of Gary, but the game can result in a nonsensical origin, as the missing word can be filled with any adjective such as pretty, fuzzy or icy.
  • Though common in Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, Gary was only in a few episodes of Trolls: TrollsTopia and like The Snack Pack, he has gradually been reduced in roles. Gary was not seen being used for any traps in the latter series.
