The Hasbro Small Figurines are standard dolls produced by Hasbro, meaning that they're released as Hasbro's main franchise focus. As a result, they receive the most attention when it comes to additions to the series like releases and playsets compared to all other toy size ranges. This series is sometimes referred to as Troll Town and by accident, Small Troll Town (this is actually the name given to the minitature series). These are uncommon names that many distributors don't use. In the Trolls World Tour era, they're just known as "small dolls" or "collectible doll range", with no official name attached to them.

The series ran from 2016 to 2022, when the main licensing of toys was switched to Mattel.[1] Mattel has since produced its own Standard Small dolls.

About
[]

Appearance

They stand approximately 3-4 inches tall, depending on the mould of the figure, which is 3-2 inches shorter than the actual Trolls themselves (in the franchise, most Trolls are 6 inches tall; remember that some like Smidge are smaller than the average-sized Troll, so this might be the exact size for the smaller ones). The range was released starting in 2016 alongside the Trolls movie, and was among the first Troll Doll releases since the failed Trollz brand that had been sold between 2005 and 2006.

In other ranges that Hasbro produces, scaling isn't always taken into account. For example, the Tiny Dancers range sees all Trolls depicted as the same size regardless of how big or small the Troll actually is in comparison to others. However, these do have a sense of "scale" per say, meaning that some adjustments are made for Trolls like Smidge and Biggie, who are sized to be respectively smaller and bigger than other dolls in the series. Bridget's doll from the Trolls era is the only one so far that had no sense of scale at all. "Child" dolls also tend to be scaled, but this varies per representation.

Originally, all dolls that represented Trolls had traditional Troll Doll cotton hair styled to stick straight up, with the sole exception being Cooper, who had hair made of wool, and DJ Suki, who has floss-cotton, most likely due to this type of cotton maintaining shape longer. The materials in both of these cases were intended to represent dreadlocks. The main major difference between these dolls and traditional Troll Dolls was the use of a "wig", whereas many traditional Troll Dolls just had a clump of cotton stuck to the inside a hollow head; the use of a "wig" was of a much better quality and less prone to the hair falling out. Bodies were made of plastic, with Glitter Trolls having glitter sticked to their skin. Later, Hasbro introduced bendable hair, which was achieved by wrapping the Troll's wig around a strong, bendable wire. Hasbro also ran a series of dolls whose skin was fuzzy (called "flocking") to match the Trolls in the Trolls movie, and a line with solid hair instead of cotton. This fuzziness was then used in Trolls World Tour for hair. As of Trolls: TrollsTopia, Hasbro has featured dolls with rubber hair as well.

Representation of Characters

The models are more accurate to the characters' designs, and are more detailed than the miniature models and other blind bag dolls. For example, in the miniature models, Branch's vest and shorts are simply printed on his body, but for these dolls, he has sculpting for his vest leaves and new Trolls introduced have their own mould. However, the result of this is that a limited number of Troll mould sculptures were made, and Hasbro only makes around a dozen moulds per series run, reusing many for different sets. In addition, accessories are often reused across multiple sets. Often a number of Trolls can be left out and thus don't recieve at least one doll; one such example is Creek who never had a "basic" Trolls doll. Hasbro also often aims their Trolls products as young girls, so they're less likely to print male characters, resulting in more figurines being of female Trolls than male; a common practice for the company when they aim a product at particular gender.[2]

One area of confusion has caused a rendancy in the range, due to the retcon in Trolls World Tour upon Tiny Diamond's introduction, as such Trolls era dolls are no longer considered accurate to the main series' depiction. All dolls based on young Trolls as seen in the Trolls World Tour series are scaled bigger than Trolls-era dolls, despite Tiny Diamond and others being smaller in the movie. The result is an inconsistency between the Trolls and Trolls World Tour eras' depictions of baby and child Trolls. This isn't the first time this occurred; originally, despite also being smaller, Baby Poppy was scaled too big in the "Basic" Trolls release, with the 4 babies that came after her being more accurately scaled to her movie size.

Releases

Many of the sets could also feature varying colors, based on the print of the model or territory that the version was released into. Some exclusive sets did also see re-selling as normal sets, but the exclusive versions would have very different colors to the normal sold version of that set. This series was produced as the main stable of doll releases, and therefore playsets are common, compared to all other size ranges of dolls Hasbro has produced. The range was produced to act as the main standard one. As such, the overall range usually varies in price from $3-$12 for normal or promotional single figurine sets, usually broken up as $2-$4 for budget figurines and $6-$8 for "basic" sets, with $8-$12 being for exclusive story packs with several additional accessories. Play sets usually retail at $12-$30, and contain extras ranging from additional dolls to play pods and a number of accessories.

These models can be quite difficult to find, as some territories never received all releases, even with exclusive sets in mind. For example, the Vibe City Bobble from the Trolls World Tour series was released in 2021 into America, but had a limited sale in Europe and generally being the hardest of the three "Bobble sets" to get hold of due to limited sales numbers. Cooper was also difficult to come by in both movies' releases.

The dolls are released in batches called "waves", each "wave" is released in an interval usually spanning a month. Some versions of a doll are repeat-released in each wave making them fairly common such as a "basic" Poppy doll, while others such as "basic" Cooper may only be released once or twice in a single wave and never repeated. This is normally to create rarity among certain models for the sake of collectors. In addition, dolls of Poppy would typically contain multiple copies of her doll per case sold to supplers of each wave, with other dolls having only one copy per case, resulting in dolls like Poppy's being very common compared to others from the same wave. Usually, a doll is the same despite which wave they're released in, but small adjustments can be made between wave releases. For example, in the "with Critter" series, Poppy was released with most waves of the toyline, but her model and critter were known to change colors during waves, and an alternative design was also released in the final wave.

Compatiblity with other ranges

For the most part, this range is a completely independent, with no compatible pieces for other ranges. However, selective pieces of other ranges have been made compatible with this one; Hasbro has even released dolls on purpose for this reason in those ranges. The main focus of such additions was critters and acccessories, but the scale factor also allows other releases attempt to match these dolls, such as baby, toddler or child dolls from the various Blind Bag dolls, which Hasbro did make use of. However, this isn't the case for every doll in those ranges, and these dolls are considered exceptions, as Hasbro usually establishes every doll range with the intention of being independent toylines.

Examples of Range[]

Characters[]

Despite being the main stable doll release, the series has a lack of individuals represented, with Poppy having half of the dolls ever released.

The following dolls have been released across the range:

Accessories[]

In terms of accessories:

Feltdemo

How the Trolls wear the felt decorations

  • Some sets contain felt decorations. These are designed to be threaded carefully into the Trolls hair.
  • Many sets also contain small critters that sit on either the Troll's hand or ears, and in the case of larger sets, pods. These serve as decorations for the Trolls.
  • In the cases of combs, they may double as hair decorations, and if placed into the Troll's hair it will look like the Troll is holding the item that's part of the comb. For example, Poppy's "Baby Poppy" model can be made to look like she's holding her bottle in her hair by combing and leaving the comb in the hair, or by wrapping her hair carefully around the comb.
  • Pods with hinges are designed to careful store accessories and Trolls away safely.
  • Satin & Chenille always come with an accessory to hide they're separate dolls, usually a hair clip. By overlapping their hair and clipping the hair clip into place so it holds both dolls' hair, it will leave the two looking like they're joined together.

Care & Handling[]

To look after these sets:

  • Note that wherever a "pod" is included, this piece set can often be very delicate and must be handled with care. Hinges can break very easily, particularly on sets.
  • Fuzzy Troll sets need careful handling. The felt fuzz on their bodies can rub off, can take dyes off of materials such as clothes, and can be difficult to keep clean.
  • As with the miniature Troll toys, hair may come off. Overall, they have a higher quality, but care may still be needed to avoid loss of Troll hair. Hair is stuck onto the doll using a "wig" format. The wig is a material matt with hair woven into it, and is glued onto the Troll's head. This isn't like the traditional Troll Dolls, which would often have their hair glued together in a bunch and then glued onto their head.
    • It's normal for dolls to lose a small amount of hair when first removed from packaging.
  • Any doll that represents a Glitter Troll such as Guy Diamond and Gia Grooves may lose its glitter over time, as it's just pasted onto the doll.
    • As with hair, it's common for them to lose some glitter upon removal from packaging.
  • In comparison to the smaller miniature dolls, many of these dolls are capable of limited head movement. This joint is fairly good, but may wear out with use. Occasionally, a doll's head can be stiff when first moved, so care may have to be taken. After its first move, it usually becomes loose.

Note that to get the Trolls hair perfect as seen in the stock images by Hasbro would involve using fabric soften and/or hair spray, wax or gel. Always research before applying chemicals to any toy's hair.

These dolls have also been subject to bootlegs, being the most common Hasbro toys to be bootlegged. Because of this, the following is information on how to help identify fake dolls.

Note that main releases announcement usually occur in January of that year, but releases begin from March onwards until March the following year when the next series is released.

Trolls[]

The following series ran after Trolls was released.

Trolls (2016-2017)[]

Poppyfigurines

Poppy's "Basic" doll

The series' main waves are known as the "Troll Town" waves, with Waves 1-3 being what makes up the series' "basic" toys. Waves 4 and 5 are the "hair with flare" series, however, Waves 6 and 7 are part of the "with Critter" series. The Troll Town Multi-pack included "Poppy's Fashion Frenzy" and the "wild hair" pack, only Wave 1 was ever released for this series. In addition, several of the "Story Packs" are included in this.

All additional releases are considered not intended to be the series' main stable of releases, instead being consistent of additional side-sets and exclusives.

Wave 1 of the "Troll Town" and the "Troll Town Multi-pack", alongside a few of the additional side sets such as the "Critter Board" sets, were all initially released with the prototype logo, being later switched to the movie's official logo.

Fuzzy Dolls (2017-2018)[]

Main article: Hasbro Small Figurines/Fuzzy Dolls

Poppyhairflair

Poppy from this series

These were a series of Dolls starting from 2016 that were released into 2017 and had "fuzz" ("flocking") across their skin. These dolls also often had hair which could be bent as their "wig" was wrapped around a wire inside their hair. This allowed for some posing that wasn't possible in the previously figurines; the sole exception was the Cooper doll. The "fuzz" on these dolls needs to be handled with care, as it can take dyes off of clothes and come off over time, being difficult to keep clean.

These figurines were the closest to the movie's portrayal of the Trolls' skin, which is felt-like fuzzy, and hair that could bend like the Trolls' own hair. Rather than a indent on their left heel, they have a stamp to indicate that they're official. The series ran into 2018 and overlapped with the "With Critter" series, which began to be released that year. Since 2018, Hasbro has changed the packaging of their merchandise yearly. This is why the final box of this series' "With Baby" and "Hair-Rising Party Pack" has the blue box design instead of the rest of the series' orange hair one.

The "Fuzzy" dolls series was being released alongside some of the final waves of the Trolls movie's promotional dolls, and thus are considered part of the Trolls era of dolls. They weren't sold as part of the "Troll Town" waves produced during the Trolls era, instead being a supportive series.

Critter Series (2017-2019)[]

Poppy from the "with critter" series

Released throughout 2017 and 2018, this series appeared after the Fuzzy body series and focused on critters.

This was the last series before the Trolls era switched over to the Trolls World Tour era, with the final waves set for 2019. After that, the Netflix promotional Dolls were set to take over. Because of Trolls World Tour and Trolls: TrollsTopia, however, this series ended up being the last major promotional line of the Trolls era, due to the sudden ending of the Netflix line that followed.

They continued the "Trolls Town" waves from the movie releases. The series is notable for its re-use of older models and aside from Gia Grooves (whose model came out at roughly the same time as her "Fuzzy" series version), there was no new models. The range instead broadened the number of critters and other accessories, as well as playsets.

The toy lines were released along side the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! series and were part promotion of the series.[3]

Netflix (2019)[]

These sets were produced in conjunction with the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! series, and are noted for their rainbow packaging instead of the previous blue one. They had the "Netflix" label on as they were specifically linked to Netflix promotions. Promotions in the miniature series ran alongside. As the "With Critter" series ended, this series would have taken over from late 2019 onwards. However, one of the factors in the promotions ending so soon was the quick shift to the promotion of Trolls World Tour as the focus, which was first released in March and April 2020. The movie also came with a switch in Trolls 2D animation from Netflix to other services with the following series Trolls: TrollsTopia, which was due in April 2020 originally. This impacted the handling of the Netflix promotional figurines.

The Netflix promotions are considered part of the Trolls era movie branding and are the last of this era.

Trolls World Tour (2020-2021)[]

Poppy's "basic" doll

With the release of the Trolls World Tour movie in March and April 2020, the Hasbro toylines began to focus on producing content for said movie.

This led to a cancellation of the final "With Critter" waves for the Trolls era of dolls and the sudden end of the Netflix-focused promotions for the 2D animation before it fully ran with its releases. The series ran from March 2020 and will end in May 2021, at which point the Trolls: TrollsTopia promotional dolls will take over focus of Hasbro Trolls toylines.

The series expanded the number of types of Troll designs, Trolls of all the new Tribes appeared causing Hasbro to design more variation of body and hair types. The color palette was the largest selection of any series before it. However, it was still notorious for other problems, with many of the electric features either not working, dolls hair being damaged by bad packaging choices, low-quality manufacturing which left glue over Troll hair, and poorly-designed playsets that were either put together badly or weren't actually compatiable with the dolls of the range. It was for a time the lowest quality product line in the Small figurines' lineup.

There are two main waves in this series; the "basic" and "mini-figurines". The Basic dolls saw 3 waves of releases through 2020 and 2021. The mini-figurines waves are broken up, with Wave 1 and half of Wave 2 being assigned to this lineup.

Trolls: TrollsTopia (2021-2022)[]

Trolls: TrollsTopia became Hasbro's overall marketing focus of the franchise in January 2021 when the first pre-orders were set up for customers to pre-order models. The series is set to take over the main marketing focus of Hasbro by May 2021, when the final waves of Trolls World Tour toys are due to be released. This series is the second part of the Trolls World Tour era.

The series is notable for its use of rubber hair and vast improvements over the Trolls World Tour movie figurines overall, only keeping some minor issues.

The second half of Wave 2 of the mini-figurines dolls are considered part of this series, while the other half of the dolls are still classified as Trolls World Tour promotional toys.

This was the final series run due to Hasbro losing the licensing to Mattel.

Misc. Releases[]

The following are various releases that also took place for this range over time but weren't part of its main releases. They are compactiable with this range due to choice design and either include accessories from this range, or toys that are able to be used in conjuction to the range.

Trolls Magazine Gifts[]

These are toys given out in this range with the Trolls Magazine and its Trolls World Tour coverage. They're exclusive to the magazine, with either an unique version of the model or different paint details. The figurines are "Solid Hair" releases with Trolls-era scupltures, and are sold with the 2018 blue promotion bag design. Although, unlike the "Solid Hair" releases from the Trolls World Tour era, they weren't sold outside the magazine and contain quite a bit of detail despite being intended as cheap productions; paint details are still skipped.

Blind bag dolls[]

Miniature dolls[]
Small Troll Town Blind Bags

The Hasbro Miniature Figurines' blind bags included baby Trolls from Series 7 onwards, with some waves intended for this series. Due to their proportional size, Keith and 4 other generic "young" Trolls (all 5 of these dolls represent nursery school age children), along with 2 baby Trolls were also compactiable with the Small range.

Advent calender

This set contains Miniature range figurines, but all addition accessories and critters are from the Small range.

Surprise Pod Pals

Various critters were released alongside the Miniature series dolls in "Surprise Pod Pals".

Squad Minis[]
TTSMseries1

wave one of the Squad Minis

The Squad minis are a Blind Bag series that are compactible with this range, since they are based on toddler version of characters and threfore are scaled as "toddler" Trolls. As a result, they can act as "baby" dolls to the larger Small range.
