In 2016 and 2017, Hasbro produced a number of figurines and sets for the Trolls movie. These figurines are the first series of the Hasbro Small Figurines range.
Appearances[]
Hasbro produce toys for the following toys in this era; Poppy, Branch, Cooper, DJ Suki, Biggie & Mr. Dinkles, Guy Diamond, Smidge, Fuzzbert, Moxie Dewdrop, Maddy, Satin & Chenille.
Misc. dolls include various critters and Baby Poppy.
No models for other Bergens were released for this series besides Bridget. Other named Trolls from the movie, including King Peppy, Creek, Cookie Sugarloaf, Aspen Heitz, Grandma Rosiepuff, Karma and Cybil never had models.
Sculptures[]
Most dolls have a sense of scale, as Cooper, Biggie and Smidge are scaled to height. However, Baby Poppy is bigger than how she was seen in the movie, and Bridget was scaled to the Trolls' size.
The designs are as follows:
- Poppy:
- Poppy's dress designs are among the most unique in this line, and it would be until Trolls World Tour before this changes again after Hasbro released different designs.
- Some dresses were purposely made slim so she could wear outfits released for certain sets, like the "Poppy's Coronation Pod" set. While all outfit designs were reused within this series, most of them were never reproduced by Hasbro in future lines.
- Poppy's models for most of this series made her fringe out of cotton. Towards the end of the movie's production line, however, Hasbro switched her fringe to plastic; this would be the standard for all future releases.
- Her "baby" design is unique and would never be released again.
- Another unique design was that from the "Poppy's Fashion Frenzy" set, which was never re-released.
- The "Wooferbug Beats" Poppy design is also unique and was never reprinted.
- Her "Hair with Flair" design was used only once more with the "With Critter" releases.
- Her "Queen Poppy" design was only ever released in this series' run, though it was originally set as a re-release in the "With Critter" series. Due to the switch of marketing focus to Trolls World Tour in 2020, the final "With Critter" releases were never produced. Thus, this design is unique to this series as a result.
- Branch:
- Similarly to Poppy, Branch has some of the most unique designs in this series. Until the Trolls World Tour line, future lines would simply re-release older moulds alongside the 2018 design that was first seen in the "Fuzzy" skin series.
- His "Hair with Flair" mould would be reused for the "Dunk the Grump" Netflix release.
- His "Skate N Skitter" set is unique and has never been re-released.
- While he can't wear any of the outfits produced for this series, certain sets such as "Poppy's Coronation Pod" feature a body mould with a neck area that allowed him to wear the capes produced, even though these were intended for Poppy to wear. Other than Poppy herself, he was the only mould with adjustments like these to wear outfits.
- Fuzzbert: Fuzzbert is only found within this series, and never had a "basic" doll design. He has two feet mould designs, normal and with sandals on his feet.
- Satin & Chenille: They have the same head mould but different bodies. Their designs for this series would be reused for all future moulds until the Trolls World Tour releases in 2020. The only way to obtain their "basic" design was in the "Poppy's Fashion Frenzy" set.
- Guy Diamond: Guy Diamond's mould was reused for all future releases. The unreleased "With Critter" mould of Archer Pastry also reused his mould, though this could have been a placeholder.
- Smidge: Smidge has 3 moulds in this series. The 3 designs use the same head mould sculpture. The "Wild Hair Pack" body mould was never reused for any other series.
- DJ Suki: DJ Suki had a single mould that would be reused for all future releases. Compared to other releases, DJ had different floss-cotton hair.
- Biggie: Biggie had two body moulds. His "basic" mould would be the only Troll Doll mould reissued for Trolls World Tour.
- Maddy: Maddy had a single mould that would be reused for all future releases of her.
- Harper: Harper had a single mould that would be reused for all future releases of her.
- Moxie Dewdrop: Moxie had a single mould that would be reused for all future releases of her. Said mould wasn't a "basic" design release.
- Cooper: had 1 mould. Unlike other Trolls, he couldn't move his head. His hair was made of wool instead of cotton to mimic dreadlocks. Due to his odd shape and non-cotton hair, some accessories produced for the series were completely incompatible with his mould, such as hats, glasses, etc.
- Bridget: The only non-Troll doll produced for the series.
- Pods: Two pod designs were released and used for this series toyline. Until 2018, they would be the only ones produced. The "hair saloon" pod would later re-appear for the Trolls World Tour series.
Packaging[]
In terms of packaging, there wad only style:
- Orange hair - This was the standard Trolls movie tie-in package that was used on all merchandise until 2017. Exclusive sets had blue and pink hair.
On the back of the left heel is a small mark indicating the dolls are official. The stamp resembles Poppy's head. This mark is either part of the doll or inked onto it. It helps identify fake figurines as well, since it's often hard to see. The dolls in this range were made in China.
The main issue with the Trolls era is many dolls come in poorly-made packaging. Thus it's common for it to be partially open due to glue-related issues. The packaging will often pull away from the top, even when just sitting on shop shelves. Dolls are usually secured in tightly so that they won't lose parts, even when open.
Releases[]
Basic[]
Release year: 2016-2017
These are standard figurines produced of various Trolls. Each comes with a figurine and at least one accessory. These are some of the most detailed versions of these models, as later reprints with other sets often skipped details. For example, Smidge's rainbow comb when reprinted in later sets was often just a single color, whereas here the comb has multiple colors printed on it.
- Cooper's model is a special mould, and contains Cooper with wooly hair and a critter.
- DJ Suki's set contains a record-shaped comb that can be put in her hair to make it look like she's carrying a record, as well as a set of headphones.
- Guy Diamond's figurine comes with a set of star-shaped glasses. It also has a mirror comb that can either hang off his hair or be placed into his hair, in both cases to make it look like he's carrying the mirror in his hair.
- Queen Poppy has a see-through torch and a crown to wear. This particular version of her has a plastic fringe to help hold her crown in place. Her body is designed for use of removable dresses, though her "queen" outfit can't be removed easily.
- Harper has a palette and a brush-shaped comb to place in her hair and make it look like she's carrying a paintbrush in her hair.
- Biggie has a Mr. Dinkles model and an accessory.
- Bridget has a picture of King Gristle Jr. and a small plain plastic model of Poppy.
- Smidge has 2 bows to clip into her hair, a rainbow comb and a cupcake.
- Branch has a cage to store his glow critter and create a lantern.
- Poppy has a plastic headband and a cupcake-shaped comb to make it look like she's carrying a cupcake in her hair.
- Baby Poppy has a picture of herself, a bow and a bottle-shaped comb to make it look like she's carrying a bottle in her hair. She also has a removable diaper.
This series is included in the Wave 1 series, and many early prints have the prototype Trolls logo as a result. Reprints of these dolls change the logo to its final version.
It was eventually replaced by the "With Critter" series. The final releases overlapped with the "fuzzy" series of dolls, which took over focus of promotion from Hasbro in late 2017.
The series was released between Troll Town waves 1 through to 3.[1][2][3] Guy Diamond was this series "common" doll appearing in all 3 waves. Branch, Harper, Poppy, Smidge and DJ Suki are the next most common appearing in 2 of the 3 waves. All other dolls are rare or uncommon dolls. The most common character overall was Poppy, due to her having 3 separate dolls released throughout the series.
Story Packs[]
Story packs were a set of releases that contained a mini-story within them based on the character featured in the set.
These were packs that included a number of extra accessories. Each one involved a mini-story. "Maddy's" Hair Studio", "Poppy's Party Pack" and "Branch Skate N Skitter Pack" are considered part of the "Troll Town story" wave. All others are additional releases.
Normal[]
- Maddy's Hair Studio goes with the "Poppy Styling Pod", the "Poppy's Styling Pack" or "Poppy's Hair Saloon Set". It contains a model of Maddy, a mirror, a haired critter, a felt scissor decor, a pair of scissors prop, a plastic wig for her to wear, and a small spray prop plus comb prop. This is the only way to get her "basic" doll (the other releases change the color of her dress).
- Poppy's Party Pack contains a model of Poppy, a cupcake felt hair decoration, a comb that can be placed in her hair to make it look like she has a critter in it, balloons, a cake, a critter and a basket.
- Branch Skate N Skitter Pack contains a model of Branch, a ramp, a critterboard, a comb with a skull on it, a critter, a helmet with a skull, and a critter felt hair decoration.
Exclusives[]
- Poppy's Styling Hair Set contains a model of Poppy, a mirror, a comb that can be placed in her hair to make it look like she is wearing a bow, a plastic wig and a dress. It was originally a Walmart exclusive. The head is raised by creating a "neck" area that allows her to wear her dress, but will also allow "cape" attires to be worn from other sets.
- The Harper art set was a Target exclusive, and contains a Harper doll. It also contains a haired critter, a palette elt hair decoration, 2 small critters, stickers, a brush-shaped comb to place in her hair and make it look like she's using a paintbrush with it, a comb, and an easel with canvas. Harper has tinsel in her hair, and is covered in a light layer of glitter.
- The Biggie set is an exclusive set that could only be bought from Toy Wiz. Similar to Harper, Biggie has tinsel in his hair and a glitter layer.
Critter Boards[]
The Critter Skitter has Biggie and Smidge, and two skitterboards which the pair can mount to race each other. There's a pair of goggles for Smidge.
It also goes with the Branch Skate N Skitter Pack. The skitterboards in this set are able to hold two dolls, whereas the one that appears in the Branch Skate N Skitter Pack can only host one. The skitterboards also have a motor that allows them to move on their own. However, Biggie takes up much room on one of these boards, and it may be impossible to put a second Troll on his board. While the normal skitterboard appears in other packs, this was the only way in the Trolls era to get this particular type of boards, as Hasbro didn't include them in any other pack.
This set is a side set that was released alongside the "Troll Town" waves, and often had the prototype Trolls logo as a result. However, it isn't considered part of the series' main stable of releases.
Misc. Playsets[]
Various playsets Hasbro produced for this figurine range. These are sometimes hard to find, and can be exclusive to certain countries or companies.
Some notes on the sets:
- Poppy's Woofer Bug Beats is meant to go with DJ Suki's figurine, and contains several felt hair accessories that Poppy or the wooferbug can wear.
Poppy's Coronation[]
This was a series of releases themed around the ending of the Trolls movie with Poppy becoming Queen, they mostly focus on her and Branch for this reason.
Coronation Celebration Pack[]
The Coronation Celebration Pack is a set that has 5 figurines in it: Poppy, Guy Diamond, Smidge, Fuzzbert and Branch. Each has a confetti mark somewhere on their body. It comes with a cake, 4 cupcakes, 2 felt accessory decorations, a critter-shaped comb that can sit in hair, and five invitation letters. This was a Toys "R" Us exclusive.
Poppy's Coronation Pod[]
Poppy's Coronation goes with the "Coronation Celebration Pack", as well as the Target-exclusive "Poppy and Branch" set. It has a glitterfied Poppy and Branch; this is so when they're placed on the dance floor, which lights up, they'll also glow. It contains a tiara, crown and outfit change for Poppy. Also included is a comb that can sit in hair to look like a small tiara, a pair of cupcakes with a stand, and a small critter.
Poppy's body mould allows her to switch outfits with items in this set and similar ones. The semi-transparency of the dolls is supposed to mimick the pair during the True Colors song and allows them to react to light. They also have streaks of tinsel in their hair as well; this was the first time in the Small range that any Troll had either. Both Branch and Poppy in this set have slightly different bodies to other sets and both have a raised head creating a "neck" area not found on other dolls and allowing room to put the sets cape on either.
Poppy and Branch[]
The Poppy and Branch set was an exclusive set that promotes the love of Poppy and Branch. Poppy comes with a dress and cape that clips onto her body, as well as a tiara and a small haircomb decoration. There are two heart-shaped felt accessories, one for each Poppy and Branch. This set goes with the "Poppy's Coronation Pod" and "Coronation Celebration Pack".
This is a Target special release, and could only be purchased from such company's stores. Branch's coloration in this set is quite bold compared to all other sets; it's supposed to represent him showing his True Colors. Both Poppy and Branch have tinsel in their hair.
Both Branch and Poppy in this set have slightly different bodies to other sets and both have a raised head creating a "neck" area not found on other dolls and allowing room to put the sets cape on either.
Fashion hair[]
This is a mini series of special releases made with Trolls with various prints or dyed hair.
Poppy's Fashion Frenzy[]
Poppy's fashion frenzy contains Poppy, Fuzzbert, Satin & Chenille. The twins connect their hair using a bow. This was also intended to be the twins "basic" doll release.
The set was included in the "Troll Town mutipack wave 1" series, and often has the prototype Trolls logo as a result.[4]
Wild Hair[]
The Wild Hair Pack contains Smidge, Harper, Fuzzbert and Guy Diamond. Their hair can be twisted and extended to mimic the Trolls' hair use from the film.
This pack leads into the "Fuzzy" era of Trolls releases, where the "bend and twist" theme became the common theme for the dolls.
The set was included in the "Troll Town mutipack wave 1" series, and often has the prototype Trolls logo as a result.[4]
Saloon Playsets[]
- Poppy's Styling Pod goes with the "Maddy's Hair Studio Pack" set, the "Poppy' Styling Hair Set" or the "Poppy's Hair Saloon Set". It contains 2 wearable plasic wigs for Poppy or another Troll, a headband and hair saloon props. It also includes several felt hair accessories that are stored in a draw in the pod. This set is included in the Wave 1 series, and often has the prototype Trolls logo as a result.
- Poppy's Hair Saloon contains four figures: Poppy, Maddy, Satin & Chenille. It contains everything in the "Poppy's Styling Pod", as well as some of the items from the Maddy's Hair Studio set. This was an alternative method of obtaining a Satin & Chenille set. It was an exclusive edition sold at certain outlets, serving as a deluxe version of the Styling Pod.
Hair with Flair[]
Release year: 2016
These are mostly the same as the original models, but have prints on their hair. Trolls that wore Hug-Time Friendship Bracelets also have their bracelets on their arms.
They only include a doll, being cheaper than the Basic sets to reflect this. To get the print on the dolls, the hair around the patterned area is quite stiff. This area may become softer with play or brushing, but some care and attention may be needed with handling of the doll's patterned areas; if the area becomes looser, the doll's pattern may not fall correctly. The hair on these dolls is also "fuller", due to how the print has been applied, as they have more access hair.
Guy Diamond's model is the same as his "basic" figurine, only with a bracelet on the left wrist. All the other models are different moulds from the "basic" ones.
The sets were released as the "Troll Town Series Wave 4"[5] and "Troll Town Series Wave 5" set.
Branch, Poppy and Moxie are common in this set due to their multiple releases across the waves with Poppy being the most common doll. A wave of the miniature figurines also ran a similar printed hair called the "Wild Hair" collection and was a promotional tie-in release with this set.
