The hinterlands is a descriptive name given to the location in the world where scattered Trolls can be found; these Trolls consist mostly of minor Tribal Trolls who don't belong anywhere. The term itself doesn't refer to a specific location within Troll Kingdom.
The existence of the hinterlands is only mentioned in The Art of DreamWorks Trolls World Tour, where they're talked about in passing comment on the various Trolls found within the movie.
Among these Trolls are Smooth Jazz Trolls, Reggaeton Trolls, K-Pop Trolls, and Yodelling Trolls. In the Trolls: TrollsTopia episode "Smooth Operator", Chaz, the only Smooth Jazz Troll, claims that he has nowhere to call his home, hinting the hinterland Trolls don't have a specific home of their own. However, the exact number of each of these groups of Trolls is unknown, for example, the The K-Pop Gang are not the only K-Pop Trolls as seen in "The Not So Good Sport" when Bi-Na, Young and Min show up.
Concept[]
The term's use within the book was to suggest that there are more Trolls out there than the main 6 Tribes, but these Trolls have no specific home nor place to call their own. This makes Queen Barb's offer in Trolls World Tour more valuable as they would be not only spared but given a home; even if it is only tiny. In other words, there simply isn't enough of these Trolls to hold and maintain a territory of their own. They simply exist within Troll Kingdom.
In the original concept of the plot, these Trolls represented music that had fell out of favor, and played for scraps of interest among themselves in a diner in the middle of nowhere. Meaning that all Trolls from the diner had represent minor interests and dying music genres. Barb had originally offered them an opening in her Rock World Tour Victory Concert. Other Trolls that were dropped in the production of Trolls World Tour include The Barbershop Boys, The Mariachi Sisters and Little Miss Polka.
Etymology[]
A "hinterland" is a remote area lying beyond what is known and literally means "hint of other lands". A such, DreamWorks Trolls uses the term to simply imply that there's more to the Trolls' world than the 6 main Tribes.
"Hinterlands" was never declared as the official collective name for these groups of Trolls, but has been used as a "catch-all" term when speaking of them as a whole briefly in The Art of DreamWorks Trolls World Tour, and is currently the closest collective term from any of the DreamWorks sources.
Trivia[]
- Currently, Hip hop Trolls are not considered "hinterland" Trolls.
- The hinterlands are part of a number of concepts within Trolls that have not been fully fleshed out or defined by DreamWorks, this was also an faced with the concept of magic and The Multiverse.
