Ludwig van Beetrollven, known simply as Beetrollven, is a character from Trolls: TrollsTopia. He makes his first appearance in the Season 3 episode "The Joy Chord", though he was already mentioned by name in "Mouth Guitar", when Minuet Sonata uses his name as a swear word upon seeing Blaze Powerchord's "mouth guitar" smash.
Appearance[]
Beetrollven is a Classical Troll with blue wings, blond hair with a blue tie, and a brown full beard. He wears a light blue vest, a long dark blue jacket, and a grey monocle. Initially, when he is first shown by Dante, he was dressed like a slob, wearing a light blue dressing gown and pink shades with white rim.
Initially, he spoke with a American accent, but once he reveals his true self he takes on a posher-sounding accent.
Personality[]
Beetrollven is fully aware of how other Classical Trolls perceive him, and their lack of humility and pride in regards to standards. When singing of him, Dante had spoken of him having a good pedigree and manners so sound that he practically invented manners themselves. Knowing this however, Beetrollven purposely pretends to be a slob so that he will be off-putting to Trolls who want to learn the Joy Chord from him, and won't teach the chord to just anyone. While pretending to be a slob, he engaged in what he calls a "Bro Hang" with Dante, which mostly involved him trying to disgust Dante enough to put him off. He rode around in the Dune Huggy, drunk milk straight from its carton, didn't use forks, watched sports and got temporary tattoos.
Despite his true self being more in line with the expectant behavior of a Classical Troll, however, he still enjoyed one or two of the things he did in his slob persona. He adores Puffalo Wings even though it is not a cultural norm for his Tribe, as they are eaten with the fingers, even dripping with sauce, which is one of his favorite things. Therefore, Beetrollven is like most of his tribe: eccentric in his own way.
Relationships[]
Dante Crescendo[]
In "The Joy Chord", Dante was one of the many Trolls who came to him to seek the knowledge of the Joy Chord, but like many others he was treated at first to a Troll that was nothing like Dante imagined. Dante was thoroughly put off and disgusted by the way Beetrollven acted, finding him nothing like the hero he imagined in appearance, manners and speech. After Dante leaves and display humility, the two reconcile and Dante is taught the technique. The episode ends with the pair sharing Puffalo Wings together.
Skills & Abilities[]
He has most normal Troll abilities as well as the abilities of his Tribe.
Music[]
In song, Dante notes that Beetrollven begins his day writing 10 symphonies and is the Classical Tribe's most highly talented composer, leading him to a lot of social status, admiration and rank. He is regarded as their most prolific and creative mind. Despite Dante being the Royal Composer, Beetrollven has a higher social status than him due to his legendary talent, to the point that his name is a word that the Classical Trolls swear by.
He is the master of the Joy Chord, and he believes only a humble Troll can be trusted with the knowledge of it.
Etymology[]
His name, as well as his design, is a parody on Ludwig van Beethoven. His name is specifically a pun between "Beethoven" and "Troll", as some words in the franchise have portmanteau using the word Trolls.
Trivia[]
- The real-life Beethoven of which he was likely based on held himself in high standards and demanded people respect them. He was known to even hold this against those with wealth and power, such as lords or royalty. This gave him a reputation as an extreme eccentric at times.
- The knowledge of the Joy Chord is most likely a nod to Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, which was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The lyrics were sung to the tune of Ode to Joy, and its very first performance was awful due to a few problems, the first being the performances having a lack of practice of the piece. The second was caused by Beethoven himself, who was acting conductor, being deaf didn't know his tempo was completely off during the entire performance nor he was giving bad instructions overall, but the performance was so unique that it had received 5 standing ovations. It was said at the time that Beethoven had to be physically turned to face his audience so he could see their reaction, as he hadn't heard any of their admiration of the piece.
- Beetrollven's name appeared in a question for The Chase on ABC alongside the names Wolfgang Amadeus Trollzart and Trollhan Sebastian Bach.[1]
