Branch makes a new friend who sympathizes with his desires for alone time.

Plot
[]

In his Bunker, Branch is relaxing and playing chess with himself. He hears a knock on his bunker door and fins a card which turns out to be a distraction. Poppy, Cooper and Smidge yell "Surprise!" and say they have an invitation to a Noise Maker Party, followed by an all-night staring contest with Cooper, who hasn't lost any of them. Branch says that he has plans with his friend "Mr. Glittercakes", and can't do anything today. Poppy calls him out on Mr. Glittercakes as they have never met this Troll. His friends want to meet Mr. Glittercakes and Branch is panicking as it is obvious he doesn't exist.

The four Trolls go to meet Mr. Glittercakes, but Branch can't find him. As they pressure him, Branch is slowly breaking under it. At that moment, a Troll claiming to be him falls out of the sky. Branch's friends are just glad to finally meet him and leave Branch alone.

As soon as his friends are gone, Branch turns on "Mr. Glittercakes", as he admits he only made him up to get out of social events and there's no "Mr. Glittercakes". The Troll reveals his name is "Thistle McCall". He states that just like Branch, he sometimes needs alone time; he loves parties, but there are so many of them, so to not hurt his friends and get some alone time he has to have an excuse out of them. Thistle explains the reason he knows about Mr. Glittercakes is that he was there the day he was born. In fact, it turns out Branch got the name from the sweets stand Thistle was managing, which sold glitterpops and cake. Thistle explains that he kept an eye on Branch until the day he needed him to become Mr. Glittercakes for him.

Thistle begins to cover for Branch more, and Branch gets his desired alone time. This ends when Thistle makes a blunder and creates his own made-up friend Dr. Fluffybutter; he has a PhD from clown college, and was made up to get out of Rufus' wintertime roll. Branch never saw this as a two-way thing, but agrees to go along.

Branch, under the persona of "Dr. Fluffybutter", tells Bella Brightly and Harper that he and Thistle have plans. The pair make up a activity excuse on the spot "Puffalo tipping", and the two girls want to come with them. The plan backfires when Thistle can't think of a single reason to avoid the girls tagging along, and the four Trolls Puffalo tip. Thistle and Branch try and come up with another excuse, "stand up comedy open mic", but the girls tag along as well to that. Branch says after that activity that it was the last thing to do, but when the girls want to go back to cupcake tipping Branch can't come up with a third excuse, and Thistle says "getting shot out of a canon", much to Branch's dismay.

At Branch's bunker, Branch tells Thistle the point of excuses is to get out of doing anything at all. A new troll pops out of his hatch saying she made up a friend and her actual friends called her bluff and now she needs a Shelia Fizzylips and her best friend Cool Ted. Branch asks who this girl is and Thistle calls her "Celine Starburst", who's with Branch and himself. Another female Troll runs onto the scene telling Thistle he is "Baron Duck von Pumpernickle" and Branch is "Lord Pickletree" and both have asked for her hand in marriage. This troll identifies herself as Timpani and Thistle states Branch wasn't the only Troll who needed excuses sometimes to get out of things. Branch doesn't want to do anymore excuses but it turns out there is a schedule.

Branch soon finds himself surrounded by Trolls who all want to use him to excuse themselves from activities. They shout "In the Excuse we Trust" as Thistle explains to a doubting Branch they have plenty of disguises for him to wear. As the group argues over a conflict in the schedule Branch puts his foot down.

Branch decides this has gone way too far. He explains that he made up excuses to get more alone time, but this is too much for him. Thistle asks Branch if they should just tell their friends they'd rather stay home, Branch says "yes" and that their friends should trust them to understand. The group then cheers as Branch says that and a banner appears with the words "Branch learned something" on it.

It turns out this was all a ruse by Poppy to get Branch to stop using Mr. Glittercakes as an excuse to get out of things, and just tell his friends he wanted alone time. Thistle confirms that he's an actor, and his real name is "Dennis", as well as an entirely different natural accent. Branch states that they went to all this to teach him a lesson when they could have just talked to him. Poppy says "Fair point, Branch!", and a banner with "Fair point" appears as the Trolls cheer.

Trivia
[]

  • The Troll using the "Baby Oliver" excuse has a female model, but a male voice.
  • The episode makes reference to the plot of the M*A*S*H episode "Tuttle". In the episode, main character "Hawkeye" invents a fictitious surgeon named "Corporal Tuttle", who was invented to hide a donation to an orphanage by using the name. Unfortunately, this results in them having to invent the "Tuttle" character. Due to the to rest of the camp's own individual stupidity, everyone ends up joining in without realizing it. So every member of their Army Medical Base ended up contributing to the "Tuttle" character, and the lie of "Tuttle" got out of hand, making the paperwork trail left behind by "Tuttle" growing beyond the original lie. Eventually, Hawkeye had to create a story to "kill" him, which ended the rouse without being found out that Tuttle never existed. As soon as Tuttle was "killed" off, however, they started another fictional character: "Major Murdock".
  • Dennis' arrival as Mr. Glittercakes is a reference to Disney's Mary Poppins.
  • The patrons watching the stand-up comedy show are drinking Glitterade from "Unhealthy Competition".
  • "Fluffy butter" is the description given to "whipped butter", a method to double the amount of butter by allowing air into it similar to whipped cream, the result is a spread that not only goes further, but is also easier to extend.
  • "In the excuse we trust" is a nod to the United States national motto, "In God we trust".
  • One of the subtle hints throughout the episode that Branch was being led on is that all of the suggested pseudonyms followed his original made-up character's name of "Mr. Glittercakes"; every name was made up using a random honorific, followed by an adjective word linked to a noun.
  • Branch is bad at stand up comedy, which is why he failed as "Dr. Fluffybutter" to get much of a reaction from the audience. He generally struggles with telling jokes.
