'''Rainbow Trolls''' was a term used for certain [[Pop Trolls]] in ''Trolls''-era media and they are a sub-tribe within the Pop Trolls Tribe itself. The Trolls were poorly explained in comparison to all other Trolls in that era. The basis of the Rainbow Troll archtype were [[Queen Poppy]] and [[Branch]], as well as their respective relatives. These Trolls are a group of Trolls that appear "normal" most of the time, but have hidden colors that only appear when they're showing their "True Colors". This is first demonstrated by Branch in ''[[Trolls]]'', where he gained a bright, vivid blue and purple coloration in the [[True Colors]] song.

The Rainbow Trolls were first named in [[Top Trumps Trolls]], and are also featured in ''[[Trolls: Crazy Party Forest!]]'' and other media. This term has been mostly abandoned since ''Trolls World Tour''. All ''Trolls'' era Trolls that would fit in this group now fall into the classification of "[[Pop Troll]]", though has returned with ''[[Trolls Band Together]]'' media.

Rainbow Trolls have hidden colors that take great effort to bring out. When showing their "True Colors", they change color and become more colorful and brighter than they normally are. Otherwise, they'll appear to be like any other Troll. Due to them being brightly colored, they're as colorful as a rainbow, hence the name "Rainbow Trolls".

According to ''Trolls'', Branch's True Colors are vivid blue hair and skin. His hair had also grown to reflect he was now showing his true self. Merchandise in the ''Trolls'' era has featured Poppy's True Colors as having a rainbow coloration, which was later seen in ''Trolls World Tour'', Poppy's True Colors are blue, purple and yellow which show up as stripes in her hair.

No other Rainbow Troll has ever been featured with their True Colors except Poppy and Branch.

They likely borrow their name from the classic [[Troll Dolls]] "Rainbow Troll" series. This is similar to the [[Treasure Trolls]], who also borrow their name from another series of Troll Dolls by the name of "Treasure Trolls".

The dolls in the "Rainbow Troll" series were notable for their hair being multi-colored or "rainbow" hair; Poppy so far is the only one in the ''Trolls'' franchise to ever be shown with rainbow hair, having such hair in the ending of ''Trolls World Tour''. They became one of the most famous Troll dolls.  Rainbow Trolls continue to be heavily referenced, more so then any other type of Troll made for the [[Good Luck Trolls]]. [[Tubbz]], [[Funko Trolls]] and [[Trollify]] for example, all have featured Rainbow Trolls.

According to the Russ Dolls flavor text, the Trolls buried minerals and metals underground, and then guarded a treasure, the rainbow was a method of leading humans to this "pot of gold" where the Trolls had hidden these precious items. Rainbow Trolls were created over time when an individual has exposure to the rainbow for long periods, as their hair took on the colorful properties of the rainbow.

In ''Trolls World Tour'', when [[Queen Barb]] accepts the other Tribes and sings in [[Just Sing]], her hair grows into a rainbow design. This mimics the Rainbow Trolls' True Colors. Most of the ''Trolls''-era families have been retired, save a few, and were never used outside of the Pop Troll Tribe. Since the term "Rainbow Troll" is no longer in use and the term was never in a situation wherein it was applied to non-Pop Trolls, it is unknown if there is any link.

Name refers to how bright or colorful they are "like a rainbow", the original Troll Dolls were noted for having a single colored hair making the introduction of Trolls with multiple hair colors appear to stand out more.

The "lore" behind Rainbow Trolls in the 1990s was stated as the following about the origin of their name:

*There are a few conflicts between media with this family of Trolls:
**In the [[Top Trumps Trolls]] game, [[Creek]] was listed as a Rainbow Troll (most likely due to his bright coloration), but elsewhere he's labelled as a "[[Guru Troll]]".
**Likewise, the game listed [[Aspen Heitz]] and [[Cookie Sugarloaf]] as Rainbow Trolls, but elsewhere both are [[Sporty Trolls]].
*The Rainbow Troll and Treasure Troll designs are the two most commonly referenced designs in the [[Good Luck Trolls]] franchise.
