Plot
[]

At the riverside, Cooper calls the start of a beach day and soon a lot of Trolls are rushing to enjoy themselves. Soon, the Trolls are having fun on the beach as Poppy sings about their good times. Val and Smidge start a hair raid prank and throw water balloons everywhere. Though most Trolls get out of the way, Poppy allows herself to be hit with a balloon. As Smidge giggles and laughs over their prank, Gust Tumbleweed is standing there holding an umbrella.

As Gust states it was more than a hunch. Holly tells Gust to explain more, but before he can do that Holly interrupts and explains that because of the years of being a Fun Sheriff, Gust is no longer surprised by anything due to his keen powers of observation. Gust then explains how Val and Smidge left hints and evidence of their upcoming Hair Raid, and therefore expected they were about to pull off a prank. Holly states it is impossible to catch Gust by surprise, to which Poppy asks about surprise parties. Gust has also never had one of those, to the alarm of several Trolls. Every time his friends try to pull one off, Gust spoils it using his powers of observation. Poppy can't believe there is a Troll who has never had the joy of a surprise party, and vows to give Gust one. Gust manages to predict word-by-word what she is about to say. Gust tells them it is not worth it, as he doesn't want them to go through all that needless effort and waste of time.

With Gust gone, Poppy states they have to throw a surprise party for Gust and Guy and Smidge agree. Poppy wants to catch him when he is at his most relaxed, so their first attempt is Harper's weekly art class. They jump out at the class, but Gust confirms he saw it coming by turning around his canvas and revealing he had painted his prediction. Poppy, Holly, Cooper and Guy are seen next mining to the Fun Sheriff's office to burst through the floor and surprise him. Val has a feeling he already knows, and reveals she is really Gust in disguise. The real Val states she should have seen that coming, to the annoyance of the others. Poppy's next attempt exploits 7 seconds that he has a day when he leaves his desk; Poppy plans to exchange his office for a similar decorated one but with his friends in. At first, this seems to work, but Gust fibs so they would stop. He explains that he has been down this path before, and sooner or later a well-meaning Troll goes too far and ends up getting out of hand. He then asks where his real office is. Sad she couldn't pull off the surprise, Poppy goes for a walk.

As Gust gets coffee, Smidge calls for help, saying Poppy went for a walk and fell in a ravine and now is stuck. Gust doesn't think this is the case and is another trick, pointing out that Smidge has a number of evidence on her to say that he is right about his hunch. However, one piece of confetti on her bow alarms him; this is a scale of a Maraca Snake. Smidge realizes that by pretending to be in danger, Poppy may have accidentally put herself in real danger. He rushes to the ravine to save her.

Poppy is hiding from the snake behind a rock. Gust explains they are cranky by nature, and there is only one way to deal with them: listening. It takes a while, but between listening and communicating with his own maraca, the snake breaks down and slowly the snake opens up. By the time he's done the snake has been driven to tears, as he has opened up completely about its problems.

After the snake leaves them alone, Gust confronts Poppy on her surprise party. She explains that she doesn't want a Troll to never experience the joy of being surprised, but Gust is okay if that never happens. Just then, a surprise party is launched; turns out this was a double rouse and the snake itself was a fake. Gust is overjoyed as he has finally given a surprise party.

Trivia
[]

  • The title is a play on word between the terms "surprise gust" and "surprise guest".
    • A "surprise gust" is a weather forecast note told in weather forecasting, when a strong windy day is present during a season or month not known for frequently having high winds in a particular location.
    • A "surprise guest" is a guest who's invited onto a show or to a party without anyone else knowing but the organizers.
  • This episode marks the second time where Poppy and Val wore their swimsuits in Trolls: TrollsTopia. They were previously seen with them in "Manager Poppy".
  • "Hair Raid" is a pun on "Air Raid".
  • Poppy pulled similar ideas during "Bunker Break-In", when she made a series of failed heists as a rouse to catch Branch off guard, with each one being part of a series of successions of her real heist.
  • Cooper burying his head in the ground is similar to the ostrich myth.
  • Gust slapping himself on the butt is a reference to horse riders, who give their horse a slap to get them going, as the slap surprises them and they jolt forward; it's considered the fastest way to get a horse moving.
  • The storyboard animatic version of the song sequence can be watched here.
