Synth is a character from Trolls: TrollsTopia. He is the ambassador of the Techno Troll Tribe in TrollsTopia.
Appearance[]
- Normal
Synth is a dark purple-skinned Techno Troll with hair of various pink tones held in a neon blue topknot. His eyes, freckles and body outline are also pink. He has a pale blue unibrow, a green pixelated heart on the chest, and green and pink arm patterns. His fins are longer than most random Techno Trolls seen in the series and have a pale blue square outline pattern with a line of pink at the end.
Synth's appearance is very similar to that of his Tribe's leader King Trollex.
Synth's design is a lot more simplified with much of his body detailing being missing but otherwise looks similar to his normal design.

Personality[]
Synth, much like other Trolls of his own Tribe, has a very hyped and carefree attitude, constantly raving with the other Techno Trolls. When faced with death, Synth would rather go out raving. He is very extroverted and often misses how others feel, displaying a bit of ignorance, and like many of his Tribe looks for excuses to rave even in times of seriousness. He doesn't think things completely through, which can lead him into problems (such as using seeds to replace glitter without considering birds eat seeds). He is even oblivious to his own failed logic at times.
He enjoys raves but aside from this, he also enjoys whirlpool surfing, "Treaditation", and sea urchin acupuncture. He shared these pastimes with Branch, whom he befriended and got to loosen up. Most of these past times involve him relaxing, enjoying fun or generally relieving stress. Once he fixes on something he can have a problem letting that go and will continue to return to the thing his fixed on and gets very disappointed if he can't have fun with something. Despite enjoying fun, it is indicated by "Mini Mini Golf" when he questions if golf is always "like this" after he and Dante get in danger. Combined with other episodes such as "Branch Out of Water" where his life was in danger, it appears while Synth likes having fun, he doesn't like being in danger.
Synth has a habit of giving "Rave Names" and nicknames to Trolls he likes or is interacting with, giving Branch the rave name of "Dubstep", Dante Crescendo's nickname is "DC", and Minuet Sonata's nickname is "Mini-Min". Synth is regarded as one of the best friends a Troll can have by Poppy. Synth is hardest on himself, taking failures in his own actions and judgments hard at times, something Dante quickly realized when Dante told Synth during their Mini Mini Golf that both of them were in danger because of Synth wanting to chase fun over focusing on the game. Dante picked him up instantly when he quickly sees Synth taking his mistake hard.
Synth has Nyctophobia as shown in "The Tunnel of Friendship". He manages to hold it together when Minuet Sonata, whom he was riding the Tunnel of Friendship with, grabs his hand as they enter. But he freaks out when the ride breaks down, revealing his fear of the dark which she is able to work around, as she understood this is why he has so many glow sticks around.
Synth also considers himself a complex character with a lot of hidden things others don't know, despite how simple he appears on the outside. In "Give Me A Break", when Poppy is describing her pet Grinchilla Perky as cute and talented, he initially thought she was talking about himself, hinting that not only Synth likes compliments but that he considers himself cute and talented. He is hurt when it turns out to be Perky she was talking about and not himself. He was also shown to be deeply concerned for the welfare of others in the episode.
Relationships[]
Laguna Tidepool[]
In "Branch Out of Water", Synth introduced Laguna to Branch when they were having a conversation on how they can figure out their Hot Springs problem.
Synth gave her confidence when she was appointed as Daylight Ravings Time DJ, since she messed up due to a lack of confidence. He is very supportive of her as a friend, and thinks she is unique as a Troll.
Branch[]
In "Branch Out of Water", Branch wanted to be his friend in order to have his 4 am swim in Hiding-Place Hot Springs. But Synth told him that the Techno Trolls needed the hot springs for their 4 am rave, so they started spending time together, where Synth taught Branch some Techno Troll pastimes, gave him the rave name (nickname) of "Dubstep", and formed a sincere connection that led to Synth giving up the hot springs to Branch. After seeing how much the Techno Trolls really needed the hot springs and using what Synth taught him to save his life, Branch insisted the Techno Trolls need the hot springs more than he did and Synth invited Branch to join them in their 4 am raves, which Branch found to be much better than his normal swim.
Dante Crescendo[]
Dante and Synth didn't interact much until "Mini Mini Golf", something Poppy picked up on herself. The main problem is that Dante is a serious and sensible Troll and Synth loves to have fun making the pair opposites. The two become friends at the end of the episode with Dante even coming to enjoy Synth's dubstep. Synth calls Dante "DC".
Guy Diamond[]
In "The Buddy System", Synth was paired up with Guy Diamond in Poppy and Branch's initial efforts to get different Trolls to bond and become friends. They got along well, but still needed time to get to know each other.
Smidge[]
Synth asked Smidge in "Palentine's Day" to be his Palentine after receiving her card.
Forte Crescendo[]
Forte and Synth became friends in "Big Brother Dante".
Minuet Sonata[]
The pair were shown as good friends, to the point they took the "Tunnel of Friendship" together in "The Tunnel of Friendship". Their friendship is an unlikely pairing, but they open each other to new things. Synth is seen trying Classical mannerisms and singing opera.
Synth's nickname for her is "Mini-Min" as revealed in "The Trolls-a-Thon".
In "Give Me A Break", he showed deep concern when he couldn't get Minuet to go get some sleep, as it was affecting her health.
Synth's Bird[]
Introduced in "BPF", this bird is Synth's pet and BPF. The bird's name is never spoken and its species is unclear during the episode.
It is also a somewhat a joke because birds don't live in water; only fish do. Synth even says "There's plenty of birds in the sea!" as a nod to this joke, the original phrase is "there is plenty of fish in the sea".
Skills & Abilities[]
He has most normal Troll abilities as well as the abilities of his Tribe.
In "The Tunnel of Friendship", he states he has the ability to sleep with his eyes open.
Music[]
Synth is almost always raving whenever he gets a chance, but has also been DJ to the Techno Troll raves. He explains that when he first started out he tried to use a DJ mask but the lasers on the helmet blinded him and he dropped the mask, which not only smashed it but set it on fire - which defied logic as this was taking place underwater. The fire promptly spread to the surrounding around.
When Synth sings his solo part in A Good Time from the episode "TrollsTopia", his voice sounds different from how he speaks.
In "The Tunnel of Friendship", Synth was shown to sing opera thanks to Minuet Sonata's friendship opening him up to new things.
Psyche[]
He possesses a very little attention span and is very absentminded as a result. He can get easily distracted by anything that glows like a glowstick. He also seems to have a poor memory. He rarely thinks things through, partially because he is too busy raving and doesn't seem to go into the deeper details of things.
Similarly to Cooper, part of the time his intelligence is played to for a gag, meaning that the writers use his lack of intelligence as an easy joke, which is common for them to do. For example, in "Glitter Rush", while Poppy, Lownote, Val, Dante, and Holly approached the glitter shortage with a more serious approach, Synth had suggested they replace glitter with seeds. When it attracted birds, he still wanted to use the seeds despite it already being clear to the other five Trolls that it was a bad idea. What separates him from other intellectually challenged Trolls such as Cooper is that he can take a long time to understand and process what others are explaining. His deficiency is simply that he really doesn't understand what is spoken to him until it's repeated in a way he can understand as displayed in "Bro, Team! Bro!" and has an issue with ecological things.
But what he does understand is when he messes up, he recoils somewhat to which Dante notices in "Mini Mini Golf" when Dante points out they got in danger because of Synth's own actions. One of the biggest issues is that the absence of intelligence makes him have strong emotional responses instead. Synth's biggest weakness is his emotional empathy, as it means that he is at his hardest on his own failures.
Despite his shortcomings, Synth knows basic math, and pointed out Branch's flawed "140%" math in "The Bunker Sitter". He also read a Funk Troll scrapbook in "The Farmer and the Hound" that installed mathematics into his head directly and noted "I understand maths now".
An example of his intelligence in play is that while he understood Minuet Sonata needed sleep in "Give Me A Break", in the underground of Classical Crest she was able to duck round a side passage and hide from him. However, as Poppy points out, she was playing the violin and she could hear her play. So while Poppy found her easily, Synth ran right past her despite being on the violin at the time, making enough noise to find her.
In "Hide & Go Hug", Synth, Demo and DJ Suki are depicted as being just as clueless as each other. With Cooper, the only other Troll in the franchise depicted as being less intelligent, having found Poppy in her hiding spot, the trio failed to even remember they were playing a game by the end of the episode. This not only implies that Synth is one of the least intelligent of TrollsTopia, but confirms he is the least intelligent of the Techno Tribe.
Water Manipulation[]
In "The Party Pooper", when Synth was auditioning for being in a party-saving team, he was shown to be capable of controlling water. However, in "The Bunker Sitter", it was shown that Synth's powers have limits; he can't hold back a lot of water forever. In "Stop the Presses", Synth suggested that his power is a form of magic.
Sports[]
Until "Mini Mini Golf", Synth had never played a form of golf, he entered only because it sounded fun and was concerned when the game ended up being dangerous.
Synth is also the TrollsTopia's best cheerleader as seen in "Bro, Team! Bro!", though he took a temporary hit in his abilities during the episode when he forgot the funimentals of cheerleading; cheer for yourself.
In "Follicle Fitness" and "The Trolls-a-Thon", Synth and Smidge are shown to be in charge of the Hairnasium, where they help students meet goals by giving their students 224%. Along with other help, the duo help Trolls better their physical prowess and get into shape.
Acting[]
In "Hair-aldine: The Musical", it is revealed that Synth can't act. The problem is that though he is willing to help out, due to his short-term memory he needs line prompts and he ran out of room on his hands to write his lines. Due to the few options that Holly had at the time, and acknowledgement from them both that he can't act, Holly and Synth both agreed that Synth was the last resort to play Hair-aldine in the musical, with Synth saying that when Val refused to play that role they definitely didn't want him to take it.
Art[]
Synth is not much of an artist. He even admits this and just goes "swish-swoo" with a paint brush.
When Poppy breaks a piece in "Art Breaker", she replaces it with a identical piece. Synth temporarily thinks he is a master artist and tries to recapture the essence; despite the two works being identical Poppy left an emotional imprint that was missing in the original. Synth's further pieces had also been replaced by Poppy and Synth continued to produce works unknowing Poppy was recreating them. When the secret about the scheme came out, Synth was relieved as the pressure was too much on him to be TrollsTopia's top artist.
Medical Status and Issues[]
Synth displays traits of having some form of personality disorder or mental disability, though it is unconfirmed if he has any form as such by the series. Certain mental disabilities or disorders cause a person to have a deficiency in intelligence, but a huge understanding of emotions and at times in extremity, particularly their own self-awareness, often seeking happiness as they have difficulties with understanding or overcoming negative emotions. Other Trolls in the series such as Dante, Holly and Poppy do seem aware that he has issues but don't hold that against him. As of right now, it is not fully understood what exactly his issues are, but multiple behaviors and symptoms point to some kind of neurodivergence, such as ADHD.[2]

Etymology[]
"Synth" is a common abbreviation given to the "synthesizer", a type of electronic musical instrument used to generate artificial sounds.
Trivia[]
- Matthew Beans noted that Synth was one of the hardest characters to figure out, but quickly became one of his favorites.[3]
- Synth and Laguna are opposites. While one is very intelligent and focused, the other is very absentminded and easily distracted. They're likely based on two of the most common stereotypes in storytelling: the "surfer dude" and "nerd". While Laguna has a strong intellectual outlook, Synth has a strong emotional outlook on life.
- Synth's water manipulation not really impressing Guy Diamond and Meadow Spriggs in "The Party Pooper" is a nod to Aquaman. Aquaman is usually considered a "useless" hero at times since unless a story goes near water, he has less use than other heroes, making him situational. The same goes for the Techno Troll tribe overall itself; their best location is within water, otherwise they're more restricted on what they can do.
- Despite his intelligence issues, he's quite adept with languages, as seen in Potluck Poppy and The Tunnel of Friendship, where he's seen speaking french (In case of the latter, is because he's been forging a friendship with Minuet).
