"The Not So Good Sport" is the first segment of the 5th episode of the fifth season of Trolls: TrollsTopia, and the 72nd overall episode in the series. It premiered in December 9, 2021.

Synopsis
[]

A K-Pop girl group comes into town looking for a Troll who has been labeled a "Not-So-Good Sport" for leaving a board game before it was finished. When that Troll is revealed to be none other than Gust Tumbleweed, Poppy and Holly are determined to get to the truth on behalf of their beloved Fun Sheriff.

Plot
[]

Holly takes a turn in checkers, taking one of Poppy's pieces, only for Poppy to defeat her by taking all her remaining pieces. As Holly comments she might not be that good at the game, some mist and glowing lights catch their attention.

3 K-Pop Trolls introduce themselves as Bi-na "the sweet one", Young "the feisty one" and Min "the one without a thing yet but I'm working on it". The K-Pop Trolls sing, which both Holly and Poppy find hard to resist dancing to. When the song ends, Poppy comments she thought the song was amazing and she couldn't stop tapping her toes. Bi-na comments no one can resist dancing to their music, while Young notes they can't resist a dance challenge and asks if the duo is challenging them. Holly and Poppy quickly say no to the notion. They want to know why they are there. They explain that it is because they are on a Troll Hunting mission, explaining they have a knack for finding Trolls. Min believes they should call it "Troll Funning", since they enjoy Troll Hunting that much. Young and Bi-na look at her, and Min notes "I am not the funny one".

They continue by saying they are looking for a Troll who left a game unfinished; he was losing a game of checkers, so he threw down his hat, stomped his feet and ended the game there. Said Troll is a "not-so-good sport". Poppy notes that everyone in TrollsTopia practices good sportsmanship - they even have a Fun Sheriff to keep a check on everything: Gust Tumbleweed. Young notes that is funny, as Gust is the one they are after. Min draws a picture of Gust, which is so bad that she notes "I am not the artistic one". The reveal surprises Holly and Poppy.

As the 5 Trolls approach his office, Poppy says there is no way Gust did that. When they enter the office, they find it empty. Young finds a half-empty box of donuts and follows a trail of sugar away from the office, with Bi-na and Min in town. After they are gone, Gust appears. They want to know what's going on, and Gust explains he had to abandon the game; it was against Cheatin' Charlie a cheater who cheated more the more he played. A game against a cheater is no fun at all, so he had to abandon the game. Holly ensures Gust that they just have to hide him until the K-Pop Trolls leave. Poppy thinks they can't search for him forever.

Outside, the K-Pop Trolls announce that they will search for Gust forever, and they might as well make him give up. As they talk, they spot Poppy and Holly leaving in a wagon with a haul of barrels and ask if they would be smuggling Gust out. To see if he's indeed in there, they begin to sing and Gust is left struggling to resist dancing. Realizing Gust maybe in trouble as one barrel shakes and the trio approaches it, Poppy and Holly challenge the trio to a dance off. The 5 Trolls dance as an unknown announcer's voice begins to comment on the quality of each dance move. Gust tries to escape, but Min catches him after realizing it is a distraction and declares she has found her thing; "the smart one". They tell Gust it is time to go back and finish his game.

Gust tries to defend himself, and retells his story about the game against Charlie. The K-Pop Trolls retract their notion as they accept that a game against a cheater is no fun at all. However, when Gust reveals he lost to Charlie, they reveal it wasn't Charlie who sent them - it was another Troll named Chester, which makes the Trolls suspicious. Gust claims that Chester was also a cheater, but while defending himself accidentally reveals he lost to another cheater, Chelsea, causing the Trolls to question his story. Poppy realizes that Gust has been declaring other Trolls cheaters when they're about to win against him, then walking away and leaving the game unfinished to not face a loss. Gust gets angry at the allegations, accuses the 5 trolls of treating him unfairly, throws down his hat, and stomps off.

As he does, he suddenly realizes that he is a sore loser. He turns to the other Trolls and sees their expressions, realizing he was wrong. He apologizes.

Gust returns to Lonesome Flats to finish the games he started. After he leaves, the K-Pop Trolls say their goodbyes, and Min tearfully realizes she is actually the one who has trouble saying goodbye. The 5 Trolls hug.

Trivia
[]

  • The title is a reference to the term "Good Sport", which is given to someone who doesn't care about losing or winning, and instead focuses on having fun and being fair.
  • A "sore loser" - as demonstrated by Gust - is someone who can't take defeat well, which is often down to many things. For example, the thrill of victory comes with the excitement of having luck or wit on one's side in the game. Winners often brag or feel extremely high. The boast to self-esteem and ego is much higher than that of losing. Sore losers also dislike defeat for a number of other issues, from jealously to humiliation, the lack of a reward for victory or besting someone else gives no such emotion.
  • Holly's defeat to Poppy at the start of the episode is a purposely set-up game. It acts as a "proof" or "contrast" to Gust later, who can't finish a game due to being a sore loser. In their game, Holly loses and accepts that she might not be so good at checkers, while Gust doesn't accept the loss and accuses the other Troll of cheating.
  • The dance-off is a reference to Rhythm games, particularly those that involve dancing.
    • This is the second time a reference to the genre has been made in the franchise, the first being in the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode "Glitter Loss".
  • Gust's display of anger is actually a nod to the "getting angry when accused" reaction. This is a noted situation in which the person being accused loses their temper over something that they're very much guilty of, with the anger being a form of self-defense to make the accuser back down. It's a social cue warning not to cross the person. The reality is that despite this being a socially accepted "guilty" verdict, more often than not the accuser is lying, and the angry person believes there's an injustice taking place with them as the victim.
    • In Gust's case, he loses his temper because he doesn't believe he didn't do anything wrong, and therefore was justified. In reality, he convinced himself that he was right to leave a loosing game and that is while he likely felt an injustice.
    • The opposing reaction is "crying when accused", in which the person tries to use tears to make accuser stop via guilt of upsetting another, as tears are a outlet for heavy emotional situations when something is too much. While anger is seen as a sign of guilt, crying is viewed as a sign of innocence in contrast.
  • "Finish what I started" is a phrase that normally refers to a feud between individuals where one was wronged or believed they were. Its spoken when the individual attempts to finally resolve or end the event that has been going on for a while with someone else, with the hope that they can draw a conclusion from the final confrontation and thus have peace of mind at last.
