Synopsis
This holiday season, get ready for an action-packed, all-star, rainbow-colored Trolls family reunion like no other as Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return for the new chapter in DreamWorks Animation's blockbuster musical franchise: Trolls Band Together![18]
After two films of true friendship and relentless flirting, Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) are now officially, finally, a couple. As they grow closer, Poppy discovers that Branch has a secret past. He was once part of her favorite boyband phenomenon, BroZone, with his four brothers: Floyd (Sivan), John Dory (André), Spruce (Diggs) and Clay (Cudi). BroZone disbanded when Branch was still a baby, as did the family, and Branch hasn’t seen his brothers since. But when Branch’s bro Floyd is kidnapped for his musical talents by a pair of nefarious pop-star villains — Velvet (Schumer) and Veneer (Rannells) — Branch and Poppy embark on a harrowing and emotional journey to reunite the other brothers and rescue Floyd from a fate even worse than pop-culture obscurity.
Plot
In the past (pre-Trolls), BroZone are about to go on a concert stage and have only one minute until their show time. An infant Branch peaks at the crowd. John Dory is excited and declares Brozone will make "Boy Band history tonight". Spruce is doing push-ups and John Dory tells him to do 100 more before show time. Clay questions why he has to keep wearing Funderpants, to which John Dory answers him that it's because they're fun. Seeing what John Dory's doing, Floyd tells him to relax because he's stressing out; John Dory replies to note that he's stressed because it's the first show of their new concert tour. John Dory explains that they promised the fans they'd reach the perfect family harmony tonight, an act that can "shatter diamond", only for Floyd to point out that he's making Branch nervous for the concert Branch is intended to debut at, which causes John Dory to tell Floyd that Branch's not allowed to be nervous.
Floyd goes to reassure Branch on the show, telling him he has the pre-show jitters and that he remembers his own past jitter incidents with the rest of BroZone. Branch says that no one has done perfect family harmony before, but John Dory steps in to state that it's because they have to be perfect. As the brothers chatter the 10-second warning hits. John Dory tells them to follow his lead, and Spruce then asks him what would happen if they fail. He ensures them they cannot fail because then their nothing and to just follow his lead.
BroZone enter the stage and are introduced individually. They begin the song "Perfect", and initially, everything in the performance is going fine. They begin to glow, at which John Dory notes it means "it's happening". As the brothers continue, the others rush to follow John Dory's lead. However, a small misbalance causes their currently formation to fall apart, and Clay, Spruce, Floyd and John Dory all fall in a heap. Branch states that he "ruined everything" as he blames himself for the mishap.
Out of concert, John Dory, Spruce and Clay argue over things, with John Dory claiming that they didn't follow his lead. Spruce confronts him and states that it's because of his lead that their concert fell apart, to which John Dory counterargues that it's the only way they can achieve perfect family harmony. Spruce says that maybe they don't want to do it, while Clay backs up Spruce as they don't want to be perfect anymore. Both Spruce and Clay declare that they're leaving BroZone, with Spruce announcing his departure to John Dory while taking his abs with him, and Clay tossing his Funderpants at John Dory. Clay tells John Dory that he wants to be taken seriously, and will look for Trolls who do. John Dory announces them that he'll quit too and attempt a solo career; thus, he leaves their pod. Spruce and Clay follow John Dory in exiting, and all Branch can do is watch. Floyd begs Clay and Spruce to not leave, but after they do, Branch blames himself and Floyd realizes he has to leave too and talks to Branch. He leaves Branch with their grandma, giving Branch his leafy vest. Branch tells Floyd that once he returns, they will make a bunker together with their brothers. Branch can only say goodbye as he watches the last of his brothers exit the pod while promising to return.
Back to the present, Branch is listening to "Perfect" on a BroZone record. Poppy interrupts his reflection and Branch quicky excuses himself, telling her that he was missing his grandma. Being able to see through Branch's attempted excuse, Poppy tells him that she loves BroZone, much to Branch's own suprise; he still covers up the reason he's listening to the record. The pair head out to the wedding of Bridget and King Gristle Jr..
Poppy and Branch come out of Branch's old family pod to sing "Let's Get Married" as they prepare for the wedding. Meanwhile, Poppy helps Bridget get ready along with Satin & Chenille. As the medley ends, Bridget enters the ceremony wearing balloons shaped into clouds, making her float towards Gristle in the sky. Poppy tells Bridget that she's like a sister to her as Bridget thanks Poppy. The balloons then pop, revealing Bridget is wearing a white jumpsuit and roller skates, to which Gristle comments that she's just like an angel. His Aunt Smead tells him he still has time to back down.
The ceremony begins, but is soon interrupted by someone. This turns out to be John Dory, who has returned from his 20-year departure to meet Branch again. Branch tries to deny having a brother, as he was abandoned by John Dory long ago. Poppy is shocked to learn that Branch was "Baby Branch" from BroZone, and everyone is watching the scene unfold in awe. King Peppy, meanwhile, gets nervous about the discussion of unknown family members. Gristle is starting to question things, as this is interrupting his wedding with Bridget, but Bridget says that she want things to continue, as she's excited about the revelations going on. Branch claims that when he was in the band, he was known as "Bitty B", and he no longer wears glasses and a diaper, which is why Poppy never realized this before; Branch also adds he used to have a falsetto made of gold. Switching back to BroZone, Branch says that his brothers disowned him the moment they all walked out. John Dory replies by claiming that he did return to BroZone's old family pod, but left again because the pod was empty; he didn't even know Branch was still alive until he heard of the events of Trolls World Tour.
Branch assumes that John Dory only came to see him because he needs something, and Poppy tries to interject by saying he's here because he's Branch's brother. In response, John Dory backs up Branch's statement but wants to be heard out about his side of the story. He explains that a while before his arrival to the wedding, he had received a letter from Floyd, saying that he's trapped by the Mount Rageon superstars Velvet and Veneer. Thus, John Dory traveled to Mount Rageous and found Floyd trapped in a glass bottle; Floyd was surprised by John Dory's arrival to the place, because he thought he'd never see any of his brothers again. However, John Dory was unable to free Floyd, because the bottle he was in is made of diamond, and can only be shattered by Perfect Family Harmony. John Dory escaped once he heard Velvet and Veneer coming to the place.
Upon hearing John Dory's explanation, Branch says that he's not impressed as it involves something BroZone tried once and failed to achieve causing their split in the first place. Poppy says their in and Branch points out she doesn't have any siblings so doesn't understand whats going on. Poppy states if she did have a sister they'd be best friends and King Peppy looks nervously on as Poppy talks about what having a sister would be like and states is she was in trouble she would do anything to rescue her. Branch notes that if he had to save any of his brothers, Floyd would be the one he would run off to save, though the others would be questionable if he would. As Poppy gets excited as she didn't hear a "no", their ride turns up. Gristle states he would like to get married to Bridget already. The two are married and the Trio of Trolls set off as Bridget and Gristle set off on their honeymoon.
After the wedding scene, the movie cuts to Velvet and Veneer, who are currently being interviewed by "The Bop On Top". Veneer starts by claiming Velvet is his inspiration, while Velvet states that she's her own inspiration. The duo explain about how they rose to fame in just 2 months, and are currently up for the Lifer Award for their achievements. They announce that their last concert is that weekend at the Rage Dome. While Velvet brags that their achievements are a result of hard work and talent, the reality is established when they come to their studio's recording booth, where it's revealed the two can barely sing and are actually talentless, relying on Floyd's own talent for their songwriting and performance.
Velvet and Veneer exit the booth, eat into their assistant Crimp and order her to stand in the corner. Velvet extracts some talent from Floyd, despite Floyd's plead that he has barely enough talent left for a Christmas alarm or a one-off national anthem cover. Velvet sprays herself with Floyd's talent after noting she can always kiss their career goodbye and turn to charity funding raising. She starts to sing perfectly and notes how closely she and Veneer are to having everything they thought they deserved. When she notices Veneer's moody attitude, Veneer points her to Floyd, telling her that they're sucking out Floyd's life, and expresses concern that he'll be able to withstand any longer, as they barely have enough Trolls to get through dress rehearsal. Velvet replies that she has already covered them; it turns out that the alleged letter from Floyd that John Dory had received was actually written by Velvet, who's currently planning to lure in and capture the entirety of BroZone. Hearing Velvet and Veneer's discussion about her intention to capture his brothers, Floyd demands the duo to leave his brothers alone. Velvet and Veneer promptly leave to buy matching yachts while Floyd sings and Crimp plays the ukulele.
Now leaving Bergen Town and preparing to take a ride with Rhonda, Branch announces the beginning of "Operation Family Harmony". Tiny Diamond invites himself along as the driver, claiming to no longer be a baby and presenting his driver's license. Branch presents his clue board, which Poppy gets distracted by due to the pictures of BroZone in various outfits. John Dory states they don't need Branch's board, and presents a postcard by Spruce. Branch scoffs at it until they find the exact island in the picture (words from the postcard and all). John Dory drives off a cliff into the ocean.
Meanwhile, Bridget is shown driving a low-rider motorcycle to a water park with Gristle as they enter their honeymoon.
Poppy, Branch and John Dory have arrived as Vacay Island, a place where every day is a vacation. As they make their way through the island's flora, Poppy asks who wrote most of the songs for BroZone, to which John Dory claims he takes credit for. As they travel, Branch talks about his experiences with BroZone, and Poppy talks about how lucky Branch is to have a brother. Branch unintentionally upsets Poppy by telling her that if she wants it, she can have his brother. John Dory eventually bumps into a Vacaytioner, who greets them as fellow rock climbers. As they explore the island they find Spruce surfing.
As Spruce goes to do his job, John Dory, Branch and Poppy chase after Spruce at his workplace. Spruce mistakes John Dory, Poppy and Branch as fans of BroZone before John Dory clarifies that they're not fans, but his brothers. Spruce gets excited and runs past John Dory to grab Branch and toss him, much to Branch's annoyance. Spruce still treats Branch like a baby, much to Branch's annoyance until he puts his foot down, telling him that he's now grown-up and doesn't like being treated like a kid. Spruce explains that he nowadays goes by the name of "Bruce", and he has become a father. He introduces Branch, John Dory and Poppy to Brandy, his wife and business partner, and explains that despite their size differences they "made it work". His children then come to the scene (only Bruce Jr. is named).
John Dory tries to explain to Bruce about Floyd's situation, but Bruce immediately loses interest the moment he mentions family harmony. The only thing Bruce replies when John Dory clarifies to him that Floyd's being held hostage is tell John Dory, Branch and Poppy to call the authorities. John Dory promptly tells Bruce that the authorities would be unable to free Floyd, and they have to do it themselves, thus needing Bruce's involvement. In response, Bruce claims to have been "in THE BAND," and with encouragement from Poppy, Bruce's children begin to chant "prove it". Branch is asked by Poppy if he's joining too, and gets the same "prove it" treatment.
Branch, John Dory and Bruce start singing "BroZone's Back" and Poppy joins them. After the song, John Dory and Bruce admit that it felt good to sing together again. Bruce asks Brandy for premission to go rescue Floyd, and she agrees as long as he covers for her the next month on her girls' yoga retreat. She tells him he should leave before he gets pink eye.
Back at Mount Rageous, Crimp is getting Velvet and Veneer ready and presents a new outfit to Velvet, which she had previously been told was for making smoothies, only for Velvet to instantly reveal that it's for hiding Floyd in plain sight. That way, she can continue consuming his talent without anyone ever suspecting. Crimp warns Velvet that this could kill Floyd, to which Veneer shows concern for the first time. Velvet tries to counterargue by asking him if he wants to return to "the dark place when [they] had nothing" before they hit stardom, to which Veneer corrects her that they're actually the spoiled children of wealthy dentists. Velvet says that she doesn't want to go back to being a nobody, claiming that Veneer was a drooling mess when she met him, which Veneer notes was because he was a baby at the time. Veneer tells Velvet that he's not prepared to give up everything he has and backs down, while Velvet notes that Crimp is smarter than she thought, so she tells Crimp that she doesn't trust her anymore and throws her in a closet.
Floyd pleas with Veneer to spare him for once, but Veneer tells him that likes his current way of life too much, even if it's costing Floyd's life. After extracting some more of Floyd's talent from his essence, Veneer tosses Floyd over his shoulder. Once the bottle settles, Floyd notices that more of his body has become crystal. Crimp then notes that her wi-fi doesn't work inside the closet.
The movie cuts to Bruce listening to one of Velvet and Veneer's songs inside Rhonda, noting that his kids love them and stating that he and his family are "totally a Veneer household". John Dory points out to Bruce that it's because they're using Floyd's talent for their musical work, to which Bruce dismayingly says "it's gonna be hard to separate the art from the artist." John Dory and Poppy are now using Branch's clue board despite rejecting it a while ago, much to Branch's own annoyance. Poppy notes the underwear Clay is wearing while trying to figure out where he is. Branch breaks some glass and finds the Funderwear in Rhonda, stating he has no idea why John Dory kept them. Rhonda is given a whiff of the underwear and gets the scent.
John Dory then tells Tiny Diamond to hit the "Hustle Button", and when Tiny does so, the group ends up flying through the "Hustle Dimension" and becoming Hustle Man before landing at their destination. Said destination is an abandoned Bergen mini-golf course called "Hole N' Fun". Branch and John Dory, they question if they're at the right place, as they're trusting an Armadillo Bus' scent search, while Bruce says that he's sure about it since he knows the answer pattern from every true crime podcast he's ever listened to.
When the Pop Troll group enter Hole N' Fun's grounds, they're met with a scary clown feature that demands to know why they're trespassing. This scares all the Trolls except Branch, who states they're looking for Clay. Upon realizing they're Trolls, Hole N' Fun's ruler, Viva, appears, expressing excitement to meet other Trolls. She's so excited that Poppy gets overwhelmed and she asks Branch if this is how others feel when they meet her, to which Branch replies "yes". Though Branch initially doesn't think they'll find Clay here, Viva soon treats them as guests and the other Putt Putt Trolls appears around her. She orders them to get food and drink, especially fries and milkshakes to celebrate. She braids Poppy's hair. When Bruce says the fries would go great with a burger, all the Putt Putt Trolls panic, to which Viva explains it's because "burger" sounds too similar to Bergen, so they have to try not to use the term since it'd threaten everyone in the mini-golf course.
Clay reveals himself and greets Bruce, but shuns John Dory when he first sees him. Viva explains she deals with the fun side of things at their village, while Clay deals with the boring things because he enjoys them more. Clay then spots Branch and makes a fuss of him while Branch protests about being treated like a child by his brothers for the third time. Branch introduces Poppy to Clay; Poppy asks Clay to do the "rusty robot dance", to which Clay tells her that now only does the "well-oiled Robot" because it's boring. John Dory claims Clay is the same old Clay, but Clay protests he's not the same. He then asks his brothers where Floyd is.
After Branch explains the situation to him. Clay tells them, like Bruce before him, to call the authorities after being told that only perfect family harmony can save him, to which John Dory once again clarifies that Floyd's imprisoned inside a diamond bottle. Clay promptly says that he's prepared to join their journey, if only to manage the group's expenses. Though Branch wants to set off right away, Viva stops them. Upon hearing a "ding" from Poppy's Hug Time Bracelet, Viva automatically hugs her and notices that Poppy's bracelet is familiar, as she had one just like that as a kid. Viva then asks her where'd she get the bracelet from, to which Poppy says that her father gave it to her. Poppy's bracelet fits Viva perfectly when the latter grabs it and tries it on, even dinging for her. Viva asks Poppy for her name again and if King Peppy is her father; when Poppy answers "yes" to both, Viva gets filled with excitement, saying that Poppy's still alive. At Poppy's confusion, it turns out that Viva is Poppy's older sister, explaining to her why Viva reacted to her hug time bracelet, as it belonged to Viva before.
Both Poppy and Viva note that Poppy's lack of knowledge of having a sister is "so Dad" (with Poppy's case presumably referring how Peppy hid the topic of the Troll Tribes and Strings until the events of Trolls World Tour). Poppy and Viva then sing "It Takes Two" together, with Branch, John Dory, Bruce and Clay acting as backup vocalists. After the song, Viva and Poppy spend some time together to get to know each other. Poppy has a million questions and Viva talks about her time in the Troll Tree. Viva throws off the full story, but Clay meanwhile explains the reality to his brothers (plus Tiny Diamond, who's currently being carried by Bruce).
Clay explains not everyone made it out of the tree, and while Poppy figures out some details by herself, Viva is very reluctant to tell her, unlike Clay's full explanation. The night the Pop Trolls escaped from the Troll Tree, a particular set of group Trolls got stuck at the Tree; when Viva and a few other Trolls came back to fight the Bergens off, a boulder blocked their passage back to the main group of Trolls who escaped. Peppy returned some time later to try finding the lost Trolls, but he only found Viva's hug time bracelet, which he decided to give to Poppy. Viva built a new home for the astray Trolls home at an abandoned Bergen mini-golf course. Following Clay's explanation, Viva adds that she often thought about leaving the course, but the fear caused by the splitting event caused her to be too scared to leave and go looking for her father and sister. The movie promptly cuts to Peppy at Bergen Town, where finally spills the beans to Mr. Dinkles, stating he should have told Poppy about Viva, but hesitated because the event had been traumatic for him and had left him heartbroken, concluding that he himself is a failure as both a King and a father.
After the explanation, Clay says that they have to unpack and continue with the journey to Mount Rageous in order to rescue Floyd, and Poppy agrees with him, but then Viva says that she's not going - nor is Poppy. Clay tries to leave with his brothers before Viva notices, but when Branch goes to get Poppy, Clay tells him Viva isn't going to let her go and they need to leave now. Viva then confronts Clay, and a group of Putt Putt Trolls close the gate to Hole N' Fun in response. Viva states that none of them will leave because they won't be safe out there. Starting an argument with Viva, Poppy asks her if the issue has to do with the Bergens, explaining that they've recently buried the hatchet (after the events of Trolls). When Viva takes her statement as a joke, Poppy makes it clear that she's being serious by bringing up Bridget to her, whom she explains is best friends with her; she caps it off by telling Viva that Bridget is like a sister to her, in parallel to Viva herself. Branch chimes in and backs up Poppy's argument by explaining his own story of his Bunker to her, trying to reason with Viva about her paranoia.
At that moment while Viva's distracted, Clay opens the gate, since no one's paying attention to him, and says he doesn't want to lose Floyd. Viva quickly takes notice and runs past the Hole N' Fun's threshold, only to step back as she can't bring herself to leave it for long. When Viva pleas Poppy to stay with her, Poppy in turn asks Viva to come with her, which Viva rejects. Thus, Viva finally lets Poppy and BroZone out of the Hole N' Fun, but not without Poppy leaving a scrapbook of her and Bridget's past times together behind.
At Mount Rageous, a crew employee announces to Velvet and Veneer that their showtime is close, and Veneer proposes to Velvet that they could do some practice and preparation work for it, which Velvet immediately refuses to do with visible disgust. Floyd tries to approach the moment by pretending to be dead until the duo go to flush him down the toilet. Ceasing the moment Velvet and Veneer are distracted, Floyd makes a break for it, but no one hears his shouts of help aside from Velvet, who orders Veneer to chase down Floyd, because Crimp is currently locked in the closet. Once Veneer finds and grabs Floyd, Floyd makes another attempt to plea to Veneer by pointing out Velvet's apparent abuse to him, but he fails to convince him when Velvet catches up to Veneer and manipulates him with insincere praises that he falls for. At Velvet's orders, Veneer then goes to tell Crimp to look and hire a new assistant for them.
Elsewhere, BroZone gets to work preparing for their rescue mission. They dress up in their old band attires, complete with Branch even wearing his old diaper. After some practice, John Dory automatically stops the routine and says it's not working. He points out the things his brothers are doing wrong and tries to "help them be better", unwittingly touching the old wounds that caused the band to break up in the process. Clay promptly accuses John Dory of trying to force them to be "perfect" and make them change back to their old selves, with agreement from Bruce, noting that they're more comfortable with how they themselves are in the present. In response to Clay and Bruce's arguments, John Dory notes that he himself isn't allowed to change because he's the oldest brother and was thus obligated to be their leader. As the arguing continues, Poppy tries to mediate with them, until John Dory reveals to Branch that after they rescue Floyd, they all have no intentions to stick around and live together as a family again.
In response to John Dory's statement, Branch finally puts his foot down, and tells Tiny to stop driving and pull Rhonda over. When Bruce tells him stop being a baby, Branch states that Bruce and Clay hate John Dory for how he treats them, but then hypocritically treat Branch the same way, thinking that he's still the baby of the bunch. He explains that he stopped being a baby the day they all walked out on him, and when Grandma Rosiepuff was eaten, he had no relatives left. Angry, he tosses a picture on the floor and states that this time, he's the one walking out on them, exiting Rhonda with the intention of continuing the journey on his own. Poppy picks up the picture, revealing that it's a scheme of Branch's Survival Bunker (labeled the Fun Bunker in the picture), and that Branch originally built it as a gift for when his brothers came back home. After Poppy promptly tells them about it, John Dory, Bruce and Clay get shocked and are left processing everything (including Grandma Rosiepuff's death, since they had never learned of it until this moment).
Outside Rhonda, Poppy chases after Branch and comforts him, and Branch finally talks like Poppy wanted him to do early in the movie, as he admits that he thought she'd leave him like everyone else. In response, Poppy assures him she isn't going anywhere without him. Tiny Diamond follows them as well, and thus the three head out to save Floyd without cooperation from John Dory, Clay and Bruce.
Elsewhere, Gristle and Bridget are riding on Bridget's motorcycle; Bridget comments on how Gristle had been kicked out of the Water Park. They stop and pull over when they smell french fries, discovering the Hole N' Fun. They're soon attacked by Viva and the Putt-Putt Trolls, much to their surprise because they thought the Bergens were already friendly with all Trolls. Bridget remarks that she didn't expect they'd both end up tied up during their honeymoon.
At the Rage Dome, Poppy, Branch and Tiny find Velvet and Veneer with a crowd of Mount Rageons, and climb the dome's walls to get inside the duo's studio. They make their way to the place where Floyd is currently held at, and when they see him, Branch expresses concern for Floyd's health, as by this point, he's very pale and most of his color has been drained from him. Floyd is happy to see Branch and calls him "a man" for coming to help him, much to Branch's happiness for having one of his brothers praise him like an adult, but Floyd then tells him, Poppy and Tiny to get out of the studio before Velvet and Veneer capture them too.
Attention is drawn to the studio's doorway as Velvet and Veneer return, having caught the rest of BroZone and Rhonda. While Rhonda is locked in the closet with Crimp, Veneer has imprisoned John Dory, Bruce and Clay in identical diamond bottles to the one they've used to contain Floyd, which he and Velvet are currently carrying inside stylized shoulder pads of the new costumes they're wearing their incoming concert (Veneer's carrying John Dory and Bruce, while Velvet's carrying Floyd and Clay). Although Bruce and Clay are happy to see Floyd, they soon argue again (much to Veneer's amusement) when Clay accuses John Dory for being easily tricked, as he had apparently parked Rhonda in a place labeled as "Reserved for BroZone" before Velvet and Veneer captured them. Veneer is pleaded with by Floyd once again, but he doesn't mind attention to Floyd's matter, since he thinks he and Velvet now have all members of BroZone (being unaware of Branch's existence), and thus can use their talent to rely less on Floyd's own. Since they have no way of getting involved in the situation to free Floyd, John Dory, Bruce and Clay, Branch and Poppy have no choice but to let Velvet and Veneer leave the place with Branch's brothers. Tiny then opens the closet to find Crimp inside it, who gives the three Trolls a hug.
Meanwhile, Gristle and Bridget are put on death sentence by the Putt-Putt Trolls. When Bridget asks if it'd be weird if they kissed at this moment, Gristle responds that it'd be weird if they didn't. The Putt-Putt Trolls are disturbed by this exchange. Just as the couple are about to get crushed, Viva stops the machine and confronts Bridget, asking her if she's the same person in Poppy's scrapbook. Bridget answers that she identifies Poppy as her best friend, and when Viva tells Bridget that Poppy is her sister, Bridget automatically considers Viva her best friend too. Viva cancels the execution attempt and says that she just realized she has made a mistake, to which Gristle says he won't press charges against her, only to be interjected by Bridget, who says she doesn't think Viva's referring to fear of punishment from the Bergens. Viva clarifies that she's wondering if Gristle and Bridget won't eat the Putt-Putt Trolls. When Bridget offers to let Viva to walk towards her mouth to show that her question is indeed true, Viva replies that she's just going to release her and Gristle.
Back at the Rage Dome, Velvet and Veneer arrive to the place to perform their latest concert. As they're about to enter the Dome, they're stopped by Rhonda, Crimp, Branch and Poppy. Branch demands the duo to give his brothers back to them, while Poppy calls them "phoneys", to the shock of all the Mount Rageons present at the entrance.
In response to Poppy's accusation, Velvet and Veneer escape with Rhonda in pursuit. As the duo take their concert on the road, Poppy, Branch and Tiny follow them on Rhonda (with Tiny as the driver), but are eventually blocked by the crowds of fans following Velvet and Veneer on their own cars. To evade the fans' cars, Branch takes over from Tiny driving, putting Tiny's pacifier in his mouth so he can focus on the road. Branch passes the driver's seat to Tiny once they reach the "End of the Road." Velvet and Veneer continue their escape attempt by moving to their yacht; as they drain BroZone of their talent, Floyd is nearly his end.
In order to reach the yacht with Poppy and Branch, Tiny tries to use Hustle Man, but he ends up dropping them in the river. While falling to the river, they're caught by Bridget and Gristle on Bridget's motorbike, which also has Viva and Rhonda along for the ride. Viva goes to hug Poppy and apologizes to her for her hesitation in trusting the Bergens. When Bridget catches up to the yacht, they try to leap but fail to catch up, so Gristle throws Rhonda towards the yacht's direction, who in turn spits out the Trolls onto the boat. Viva trips up Veneer, takes his diamond bottles, and rescues John Dory and Bruce, albeit they're still trapped in the bottles. When Velvet and Veneer try to knock them off their bodies and stomp on them, Branch, Poppy and Viva are tossed overboard and into the river, but bounce back thanks to Rhonda putting an arm for them to climb towards the yacht. They pull the diamond bottle with Clay out of Velvet's costume and rescue him.
As Velvet and Veneer finish their current song, Velvet offers to continue the concert with an encore song. Veneer realizes that at this point, Floyd won't be able last half a song on his own, so he abstains from singing for the encore. Velvet begins to sing again and drains Floyd even further. Branch notes that Poppy said to Viva a while ago they don't need to be perfect, and tells his brothers that they can do the same. The brothers agree to follow Branch's lead this time.
In the middle of Velvet's singing, Crimp cuts the sound of her microphone, giving BroZone the chance to sing "Better Place". As they sing, they're joined by Viva and Poppy, and together BroZone achieve Perfect Family Harmony. Floyd eventually joins in to give his last effort to free them all from the diamond bottles. Although he succeeds in breaking all the bottles, Floyd ended giving the last remains of his talents for it, and ends up falling unconscious, making his brothers gather around him out of concern for his safety. It quickly turns out that thanks to his brothers' strength during the song, Floyd is still alive, and he's able to wake back up even if he's very weakened; his brothers plus Poppy and Viva hug him in response.
After seeing the tender moment between the Pop Trolls, Veneer finally realizes the error of his ways and confesses to his and Velvet's audience that both of them are actually frauds. This shocks the audience of Mount Rageons as Veneer admits that they've been torturing Trolls to make their music, and that while Velvet was the one who planned the whole thing, he still went along with her and is thus as responsible for the crimes as Velvet is. The duo are promptly arrested by Mount Rageous' police for their various crimes, which are listed as "trollknapping", "troll torture", "fraud" and "tax evasion". While Velvet is infuriated over getting arrested, Veneer accepts his fate as the two are taken away to prison.
As the Trolls watch the public event unfold, Poppy asks Branch how he feels after the whole ordeal. Branch simply says that he's happy and promptly kisses Poppy, though not without Poppy telling him to slow down first. As Poppy and Branch's kiss is broadcasted onscreen, both the Trolls (including a now-recovered Floyd) and Mount Rageons celebrate.
At the end of the movie, BroZone, Poppy and Viva come to Vacay Island alongside Gristle and Bridget, where Viva reunites with Peppy. As BroZone announces they're about to go on stage, another Pop Troll boy band named Kismet comes to the scene, to which Branch reveals he was once part of Kismet as well, much to BroZone's surprise. The two boy bands then perform "Better Place" together. Later, Branch proposes Poppy and Viva to become honorary members of BroZone, an offer they happily accept. Branch, Poppy, Viva and the rest of BroZone sing "Family" to formally close the movie.
In a mid-credits scene, Tiny Diamond is seen relaxing at Vacay Island while explaining to Mr. Dinkles how he enjoyed his journey throughout the movie.

On November 22, 2021, after the controversial decision for Trolls World Tour to be a PVOD release, Universal has noted that a home release won't be done a stand-in for an theatrical release for Trolls 3. At the same time, it was announced that a third Trolls film would be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.[25][26] Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake are confirmed to reprise their voice roles as Poppy and Branch, respectively.
When asked if they would get a trailer for Trolls 3 in December 2021, Tim Heitz claimed that the movie is still too early in the process for a trailer.[27]
2022
When speaking of Trolls: TrollsTopia, Matthew Beans noted that movie characters come with restrictions in related 2D-animated media of the Trolls franchise, and in comment mentioned that he had no idea about what they planned to do with the new characters from Trolls World Tour, only claiming that they're being handled by the movies' crew.[28]
In July 2022, the Supervising Animator Kevan Shorey stated that they had no idea when the first trailer would come out.[29]
Collin Jack has mentioned that he's the head of story for the movie.[30]
In May 2022, the first teaser poster was shown revealing an upcoming female Troll.[7]
While replying to a birthday wish request, Kevan Shorey noted that he had just finished a scene involving Poppy and Branch.[31] He later explained that what he meant was the basics of the scene were done, so further members of the movie's production team were now going to be brought in to complete the scene, including fuzz, lighting and effects. He also stated that by then, Poppy and Branch had what was their "temporary hair".[32] Furthermore, he confirmed that the audio of the scene was already done, as he couldn't start work without audio recordings.[33] The tweets Kevan posted were removed later.
While the new female Troll character was known to exist at this point, her name was still not allowed to be stated.[10]
In October 2022, the first 8 images of concept art were released, acting as the first look ideas that had been produced for Trolls 3.[34][35] However, the tweets were later removed.
In mid November 2022, leaks of the logo were released showing the full name as "Trolls Band Together".
In early December at the Brazilian CCXP2022 expo, more promotions for Trolls 3 were since, including the official Logo, some renders of Poppy and Branch, and Tiny Diamond sitting on said logo, confirming the return of the aforementioned characters.
In late December, a synopsis was posted.[18] Netflix streaming for Illumination and DreamWorks movies was posted, revealing a expected May 2024 release of the Trolls 3 film.[36] As part of Universal's deal with Netflix, the film will stream on Peacock for the first four months which started in March 2024 starting on of the pay-TV window, then will move to Netflix for the next ten starting in July 2024, and then will return to Peacock for the remaining four starting in April 2025.[37][38]
Note from the Trolls Trollpedia wiki staff, in Q4, the name "Viva" was leaked and fans began to use this name, however, the origin of this leak is currently unknown. If origin is found, please leave source in "comments" or edit onto the page.
2023
In March 2023, Universal Studios took part in the 'French Licensing Day & Licensing International Awards'. The result was a number of franchises and upcoming films were mentioned to have news dropped on them, with Trolls 3 being mentioned amongthem.[39]
On March 6, 2023, Theodore Shapiro was confirmed to be composing the score for Trolls Band Together, returning from Trolls World Tour, the first piece in the franchise wherein he had the role of score composer.[40]
The movie's official poster, alongside with first trailer was released in March 28, 2023 on Universal Pictures and Peacock Kids' YouTube channels. The same day of these announcements, DreamWorks Animation revealed the official title, Trolls Band Together. At the same time, new cast members of the film were officially announced, including Eric André, Kid Cudi, Daveed Diggs, Troye Sivan, Camila Cabello, Amy Schumer, Andrew Rannells, RuPaul Charles and Zosia Mamet. Walt Dohrn returned to direct the film after its predecessor, while Gina Shay returned to produce the sequel. Tim Heitz was later announced as co-director.[41]
According to Shay, the idea for the film came about right after Trolls. Although Trolls Band Together was predominately CGI animation, the film includes some 2D animation sequences done by Titmouse, Inc., with some animation styles inspired by Yellow Submarine and Fantasia.[42][6] In addition, some additional animation was provided by DNEG, around six animators worked a bit on the film including Nimona animation director Ted Ty.
In June 2023, a fan reported a copyright claim came up on a video a friend had submitted to YouTube. The copyright claim against the 3rd parties video seems to confirm that the Trolls Band Together movie was complete and had already been submitted to YouTube for copyright claim and checks purposes.[43]
Note from Bureaucrats to readers, this is common see this article to explain why, though there may be other factors not mentioned by this article, such as other projects from the same studio may have been considered a risk to ticket sales. At this time, no further information is available to confirm any details.

Development
Themes
A main focus as well for the film is "families", particular as COVID-19 had impacted families during the last film (Trolls World Tour) and about how Branch and his 4 brothers had an open wound which needed time to heal. The focus is less on other countries like in Trolls World Tour, but continues to open the world of Trolls more and more. Since the focus is more on families this time, the Bergens were brought back after their absence in Trolls World Tour, by highlighting the matrimonial union of King Gristle Jr. and Bridget.
As for Branch's brothers, they each had to have their own personalities to explore and relationships within their family. Like the first film, Poppy sees the brothers as a challenge to explore and Branch himself has a bigger emotional hurdle to explore as a result which Poppy will help him through.[6]
The movie is meant to be a emotional rollercoaster for Branch especially, as he expected his brothers to return but they never did, as the same time it was confirmed he was 3 or 4 when they left (though the movie itself contradicts this). In addition, the movie intends to create a family tree.[16] This is reinforced with how Floyd is the glue of BroZone that eventually brings them back together.
In contrast, abusive and unbalanced family dynamics are brought to light through Velvet and Veneer. By using their unhealthy relationship to contrast with BroZone's, it demonstrates how a toxic family relationship can intoxicate a person's mind, like how Veneer is stripped from making proper life decisions and has become mentally broken, due to Velvet's narcissism, thus his need to remove her from his life. This also brings out the concerns of how the pursuit of fame, such as in the materialistic society of Mount Rageous can turn people into monsters who neglect and mistreat their families.
Poppy meanwhile wanted a sister, believing she didn't have one and was supportive of fixing the issues with Branch and his brothers because she believed it was a unbreakable bond. Then when her wish of having a sister came true and she discovered Viva, it was at first a perfect relationship. But it quickly falls apart when Viva can't let go of her own past and Poppy faced her own family problem. A short time after this, Branch found himself also addressing his brother's behaviors. This shows that families have to work their ways through the obstacles, instead of staying in an imaginary bubble of the perfect family, or blaming others for their imposed problems.
Change is also present as a major theme of this movie. This is firstly presented by BroZone, with John Dory, Bruce and Clay accepting that Branch is now a full-fledged adult, and that John Dory becomes more willing to change his own attitude towards his brothers' choices and also himself by trying to become less egotistical. Viva is also shown to have gone through changes, by accepting that Poppy has grown and that the Bergens have indeed changed for the better. Branch has also changed on how he views his three oldest brothers, now finally understanding their perspectives. Even Veneer has undergone a positive change, by accepting that he is wrong with his actions and that he shouldn't let Velvet change who he is inside; through changing into a responsible person who accepts his own punishment and comes clean with his honest confession, he is able to make peace with the Trolls and himself, and earning Floyd's forgiveness, respect and friendship.
A minor theme is also about the price of fame and that Velvet and Veneer may have fame and fortune, but it comes at the cost of Floyd's life. Veneer even starts to question his own morals, eventually leading to his own revelation about what he is doing is wrong. It also corresponds to how fame and fortune cannot purchase or exchange for healthy, happy relationships, as Velvet has never changed her abhorrently abusive attitude towards Veneer even after becoming famous, and only further hurts him in different ways to fuel her own ego.
Character Development
The only thing noted so far is that the official status of Poppy and Branch's relationship is confirmed in this movie.[50] Tim Heitz also said that the two are "going on a epic adventure", but told fans to wait and see if the pair kiss on the lips.[51]
In a French interview to Little Big Animation, it was noted the film would focus much on Poppy and Branch's relationship with each other as it became closer to "Broppy" (this is a fan dubbed term by fans that has existed since Trolls that was first officially used in Trolls: Holiday in Harmony).[6]
Software Usage
Like Trolls World Tour, this movie is animated via the MoonRay software.
Much of its 2D animation is also inspired by Adventure Time and Steven Universe.
Characterization
- Poppy's Character Development
Since the last film, Poppy has become not only a better listener, but a mature and wise Queen to her people, as she is giving advice to those who needed it the most, even giving them time to reflect their mistakes. Similar to the first film, Poppy has a challenge in Branch's oldest brother John Dory, as he also isolated himself from the outside world, but he didn't lose his happiness and turn gray like Branch did, due to having his trusty companion Rhonda for company. Throughout the adventure to rescue Floyd, Poppy's cheerful and optimistic personality not only rubbed off on John Dory but also reopen his heart. However, much like her disagreement with her father in the last film, Poppy in this film gets another one in her long lost sister Viva as she is a lot like her in personality, even being similar to who she was by not listing to anyone but herself as she didn't believe her that the Bergens change their ways. Fortunately, Poppy understands Viva's point of view as she doesn't blame her for wanting to protect her and their people.
- Branch's Character Development
This films brings Branch's trust issues into light from the first two films, as he gets it from his older brothers leaving him when he was very young. Although he loves and missed his brothers very much, Branch is angry and hurt with them as he questions if they ever cared about him at all. This problem in trust makes it difficult for Branch to be open with anyone, including Poppy, as he fears if he got too close to anyone they would leave him like his brothers did. However, during the journey to rescue Floyd, Branch takes the time to forgive his brothers as he comes to understand their reasons for leaving and feels sympathy for them, especially John Dory. Branch even gains the courage to stand up to three of his brothers for their awful behavior and helped them realize that living isolated from not only each other, but also from the outside world is wrong. Also, through Poppy's support and encouragement, Branch learns to be more open and that it's okay to trust those you are close with.
- Branch's Brothers Character Development
At first, three out of four of Branch's brothers only thought about themselves as they all left without thinking about their two younger siblings. However, over the course of the film, John Dory, Bruce and Clay may have made selfish choices and mistakes but they truly care about each other and their younger siblings as they went out of their way to save Floyd and showed deep affection for Branch.
Although Floyd doesn't get much development, he does learn that some sacrifices are worth it for those you love and care about, after witnessing his brothers willing to risk everything to help him. Clay learns that both his past and current self is what makes him who he is and shouldn't be ashamed of a quality that is always been a part of him, as Branch's advice of being yourself impacted him. Despite not getting the same focus as his brothers in this film, Bruce does come to understand that words can hurt those you care about if you're not careful, after realizing how harsh he was to John Dory and spread that behavior onto Branch for no reason. However, out of all the brothers, John Dory gets the most development as he learns that it's never too late to change and that good leaders/older siblings listen. Through Poppy's positive influence and three of his brother's help, John Dory lets go of his ego and realizes the error of his ways, having come to terms that his younger siblings have grown up and mature.
- Viva's Character Development
Viva is a lot like Poppy in personality. However, unlike her sister, Viva is a lot more cautious as she spent most of her time prepare for a Bergen attack with the group of Trolls that were separated with her while her family and the rest of the group lived a carefree life as they didn't live in fear for a future attack, except Branch. Also, Viva is a lot like Poppy was when it came to listing to others as she wanted to believe and hear what she wanted. Although, upon reading Poppy's scrapbook and meeting the Bergen leaders, Viva learns to take chances and be more open minded.
Plot Changes/Scene Deletions
Storylines
- Perfect Family Harmony
Originally in concept artworks, the perfect Family Harmony could only be achieved by having BroZone singing out their songs and lending their talent essence to Branch. This would later be changed to them harmonizing and glowing as the finalized effects of the perfect family harmony.
- Velvet and Veneer's characterizations
In early concepts, Velvet and Veneer were originally going to be hideous villains, who were Bergens or resembled them. While Velvet's characterization had been more consistent with her being irredeemably evil and narcissistic, despite at one point being characterized to use sophisticated words albeit wrongly at times, Veneer has undergone more layers of changes. For example, he is given more sympathy with the implied background of having a sister that dictates his decision-making, while also having him accept his punishment to atone himself and becoming friends with Floyd in the end to let him have a change of heart and rediscovering his true self.
Unlike the movie, Trolls Band Together: The Junior Novelization, due to being a beta manuscript that appears to have undergone very late changes, has no happy closure for Veneer and Floyd. He and Velvet were originally going to try escaping, only to fall off the yacht and into the river. This differs from how the movie actually gives him a second chance in life through Floyd who chooses to forgive and become his friend, despite receiving his punishment.
Velvet and Veneer's twin status is also more pronounced in one of the deleted scenes' storyboards (back when they were designed to be Bergens), where Veneer protested that Velvet was only older than him by two minutes.
- Floyd's Plight
The presentation of Floyd being harmed was different. He was originally going to have his essence drained from his throat, rather than from his entire body. At one point during storyboard stage, Velvet was also planning to exploit Floyd's hair in a fantasy sequence as well.
At another earlier stage of development, the draining device used to suck Floyd's essence was a necklace, rather than a shoulder pad.
- Crimp's Species and Characterizations
Crimp initially wasn't the only assistant Velvet and Veneer had. In fact, there were more of Crimp's kind who were also the twins' assistants.
Another deleted scene also showed that Crimp was more obviously complicit with Velvet and Veneer's scheme by pushing the four older BroZone brothers' bottles into the shoulder pads.
Deleted Scenes
- Introduction and Wedding Scene
There are many changes for the wedding scene.
For instance, Fuzzbert was going to be part of the wedding guests. The guest Bergens also opened many umbrellas together to welcome Bridget arriving from descending from the sky, instead of her rollerblading onto the red carpet.
Branch was also going to wear a tux for this occasion, rather than the varnished vest he wears at the wedding.
There was also going to be a scene where Gristle and Branch, as well as Bridget and Poppy, interacting with each other by letting the Bergen royal couple having their two Troll companions on their palms.
- BroZone Reunion Party Planning Scene
Many characters, such as those from The Snack Pack, are also cut or have reduced screen-time during the movie, especially from a deleted scene about planning BroZone's reunion. King Trollex was originally going to be shown as the DJ, Smidge initially had involvement in wedding preparation, and Cloud Guy also was supposed to have more dialogues regarding his false advertising. In fact, there was going to be more Cooper and Prince Darnell interactions, like Cooper getting frightened over a nonexistent cupcake monster when checking out what's inside Fuzzbert, which causes Cooper himself to poop out cupcakes.[52]
Chad was also going to appear with King Gristle Jr., but he was not able to make through the final cut.[53]
- Peppy's Photo Album Scene
King Peppy was originally going to have a scene where he looked at a photo album that he retrieved from beneath his bed, reminiscing about Poppy's younger days, and missing Viva. Poppy's egg was seen and Viva was also supposed to be introduced at this point in a photograph which showed her holding Poppy as a baby.[54] Though it is known that Viva's removal was made a big reveal later in the movie. Branch's family loss would become the soul focus of the introduction.
- Wall Climbing and Chipped Teeth Scene
There was originally a scene of John Dory, Branch and Poppy climbing up a tall hill with grappling hooks. During the climb, John Dory teased about Branch's baby teeth, which offended Branch, who unfortunately resulted in having chipped teeth and other injuries. This scene was cut likely due to graphic imagery and time constraints.
- BroZone Practice Montage
There was originally going to be a training montage inducted by Poppy to train three of the BroZone brothers' vocal chords and harmony, after Bruce, then called Selleck, was recruited. This was done through testing how the three brothers would manage to use their singing to shatter fragile objects.
This scene included a joke of Tiny Diamond not knowing John Dory's name as well.
- Velvet and Veneer's Spraying Scene
There was originally a scene where Velvet forcibly sprayed Floyd's essence into Veneer's mouth without warning, and then used her fingers to close his mouth.
- Illegal Pet Monkey
Veneer's pet monkey was originally shown in one of the deleted scenes, being a monstrous monkey named Snorkels.
- Bridget and Gristle's Honeymoon
Bridget and Gristle were originally going to have an entire montage of them enjoying their honeymoon at a water park, before Bridget rode their motorcycle into the sunset. This montage was likely cut due to time constraints.
- Trapped in Hole N' Fun
Clay was originally the one who orchestrated the plan of trapping his brothers and Poppy, with Viva and the other Putt Putt Trolls being his minions instead.
- Post-Argument in Rhonda Scene
After Branch snapped at John Dory, Bruce, and Clay, Poppy was originally going to prevent Branch from exiting Rhonda.
- Crimp and Tiny Romancing
There was originally going to be a scene of Tiny and Crimp romancing each other, and leaving Branch and Poppy to continue with the rescue mission. Although this scene is intended to be a one-off gag, it became questionable due to both characters having a huge age gap, evidently with Tiny being a baby and Crimp implied to be older than him. This presumably led to this particular scene being cut.
- Car Chase Scene and Climax
Velvet and Veneer originally had a different car, and they also had scarves instead of complete makeovers with their costumes and hairstyles like they have in the movie. The scarves were, in fact, tools to conceal the other BroZone brothers. Veneer initially was also shown to have concerns over the plan, but Velvet insisted that there would be no problem.
Rhonda was also going to pop out from the ground and onto the carpet, and Veneer could be seen covering his face in embarrassment during the confrontation. Both twins were additionally horrified to see Branch's face broadcast across the screens before they hurriedly leave.
During the scene where Branch was trying to grab Floyd, Velvet was originally going to inhale Floyd's essence to break free from Branch's grip, rather than just swatting him.
Both Velvet and Veneer also descend differently onto the Rage Dome stage, falling with microphones without catching the cameras.
- Villains Singing Scene
There was originally a storyboard of a montage with prototype Velvet and Veneer singing while sucking Floyd dry to highlight their then undecided personalities, and that Crimp was going to interact with some rather scornful production crew who spat in disrespect.
- Branch and Poppy Kissing Scene
Branch and Poppy originally kissed at a different angle during one of the storyboards.
World Building
Designs
- Mount Rageons
Mount Rageons were originally nonexistent as a species. Instead, they were intended to be a division of Bergens. Their addition is likely added much later into production.
Also, in earlier designs, many of them were illustrated in the shape of the letter "V", or presented as fuzzy or ugly monsters.
- Mount Rageous
Aside from the Mount Rageons, their habitat Mount Rageous is introduced. It is designed to be a bustling hub inspired by 80's to 90's aesthetics, with constantly partying teenagers that the Mount Rageons are based on. It is also evident that it is more technologically advanced than most Troll tribes' settlements, having wide flat-screen televisions and even internet access. It is highlighted by visuals to be extremely night-less, glamorous, and bright, which is to correspond with the Mount Rageons' restlessness and vibrancy, but also their materialism and shallowness.
Mount Rageous is also entailed to have incorporated elements of a classic shoegaze band, and albums like Loveless. Furthermore, it was intended to have aesthetics of ribbon-like noodle streets, stacked gems, and floating signs. There was also intended to be jellybean cars as vehicles.
- Vacay Island
The habitat Vacay Island is introduced. It is intended to visually convey relaxation and exuding paradise vibes. Early concept artworks showcase creatures outside of Vacaytioners living on the island.
- Hole N' Fun
The habitat of the Putt Putt Trolls is also introduced, and it is evident with elements of abandoned golf courts. It was originally much wilder, more unkempt, and desolated as presented in concept artworks.
Music
| For the score of the film, see Trolls Band Together (Original Motion Picture Score). |
While Trolls World Tour was inspired by 80s Hard Rock music, the focus of Trolls Band Together is 90s boyband music. Theodore Shapiro returns as the main composer for the film while Justin Timberlake returns as the main music executive. They are joined by other musicians both some returning from Trolls World Tour as well as new ones. 5 original songs are set for the movie alongside more jukebox music, including classic songs and familiar upbeat ones. Like Trolls and Trolls World Tour, the same sequence choreographer, who worked with Justin for NSYNC, returns for dance sequences.[6]
As 2023 progressed, midway through the year, a rumor was spread that NSYNC was reuniting for a song related to the promotion of the movie. At the end of August, a website called "Take You To a Better Place" appeared with what seemed like NSYNC personified Trolls of the band, with Justin Timberlake's "Troll" being of course Branch.[55]

Success and Critical Response
The Metro writer LI-Z reviewed the movie. LI-Z reported having a soft spot for Trolls and enjoyed that movie but likened Trolls Band Together to a "punch to the face" and said it was "painful to watch". LI-Z applauded the visuals as a position as the animation was a positive but criticized the storyline as a negative and quoted that "AI could have done better". LI-Z summed it up as nothing but a cash grab when commenting on the desire for Justin Timberlake to make 7 films.[56]
Wendy Ide of The Guardian meanwhile also sided with LI-Z, noting like LI-Z that as a series Troll is "wearing thin".[57] Cath Clarke meanwhile presented a more positive overall review, but noticed a lot of elements of the movie were just backdrops to its bonkiness. While she didn't think the movie would become vintage family material, but noted it was gloriously odd in its own way.[58]
Helen O'Hara of the Telegraph presented a more positive but critical review noting once again the animation and visuals were to be praised. Helen said the film was mostly weightless but fun. Helen criticised the film for aiming wierd but playing it safe at the last moment.[59]
Trolls Band Together has grossed over $103 million in the United States and Canada, and $106.5 million in other territories, garnering for a worldwide gross of $209.5 million.[60][61] In the United States and Canada, Trolls Band Together was released alongside Next Goal Wins, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Thanksgiving, and was projected to gross $27–32 million from 3,800 theaters in its opening weekend.[62][63] The film made $9.4 million on its first day, including $1.3 million from Thursday night previews. It went on to debut $30.6 million, finishing second behind The Hunger Games.[64] The film made $17.8 million in its second weekend (a drop of 40.6%), finishing in fourth.[65]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 60% of 85 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10. The website's consensus reads: "Trolls Band Together serves up another amusing, eye-catching outing that should entertain young fans of the franchise while remaining perfectly painless for parents."[66] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 53 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[67] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, same as the first film, while those polled by PostTrak gave it an 85% overall positive score, with 67% saying they would definitely recommend the film.[68]
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, writing, "Elizabeth Tippet's screenplay garners laughs thanks to the sheer volume of jokes (the hit-to-miss ratio is pretty unbalanced), and there are several amusing one-liners about the music business."[69] Tatiana Hullender of Screen Rant earned the film 2.5 out of 5 score, writing "Trolls Band Together shows clear signs of franchise fatigue, but a few new songs and vivid animation choices keep it afloat a little longer."[70]

Errors
- When she appears Grandma Rosiepuff is shown sat at her table. However, in the shot of Branch and Floyd, it can be seen she is no longer at the table and has vanish.
- During Crimp's 9 to 5 segment, a half-body model of Veneer can be seen after he has finished pouring his coffee.
- When Velvet immediately wears the shoulder pads to test out the vacuum, her necklace is colored gold instead of purplish magenta.
- Clay and Floyd's bottles in Velvet's shoulder pads are supposed to be left and right, respectively. However, in some of the scenes such as when Velvet and Veneer are both on the red carpet greeting their fans, the bottles' order are swapped.
- On Netflix, the random Rageon trapped inside the toilet after Poppy accidentally cut a wrong wire is wrongly credited as Veneer.
- When Velvet is twirling herself on the highway, part of her hair's curls briefly disappear before the reappear in the next frame.

Toys
Mineez - Trolls promotion
In 2022, a licensing agreement with Mattel was announced. This comes ahead of the film, Mattel's merchandise distribution will begin in Fall 2023 in line with the release of Trolls 3.[84] In the process, Hasbro will no longer be producing toys under the "Trolls" brand.[85]
Toys began to be promoted from mid-2023, including Trolls Mineez[86][87], Imaginext[88] toys and Little Live Pets.[89] The first plush toys also began to appear.[90] Tie-ins for the movie also included a Polly Pocket tie-in.[91]
Mattel also created their own range of standard toys, these were similar to the Hasbro line.[92]

Funables also ran a promotion with their Fruit Flavored treat snack bags featuring the characters of Branch and Floyd on them.
Apps & Video Games
Trolls Remix Rescue was released on October 27, 2023. Though other apps have existed based upon Trolls, this is the first video game based upon the series.[99] In addition, the Trolls will also make an appearance in DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing, which was released on November 3, 2023, though not as racers. Both games are available on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Nintendo Switch.[100]
Etymology
Similar to other puns in titles for the franchise, "Band Together" is likely a pun between two definitions of "band": a group of comrades and a group of musicians.
The title can also refer to the movie's premise, which is Poppy and Branch bringing the former band BroZone back together.
According to a interview with Little Big Animation, the reason in the French version the name Trolls Band Together isn't translated and the movie is still being called "Les Trolls 3" (translation; "The Trolls 3") is simply that it is not possible to accurately translate it directly, due to "band together" being an idiomatic phrase in English, and the English title being a pun on its own right.[6]
- This likely explains why the movie title is not translated in other languages as well. This would also explain past installments of the franchise seeing their titles renamed in other languages.
Cultural References
- During Velvet and Veneer's arrest, Clay notes they were commiting tax fraud and that there would be consequences. This is a popular cultural nod to the gangster Al Capone. Al earnt the reputation for being untouchable, as he would make people disappear or paid off corrupt law officials to look the other way. However, Al gained money illegally and thought he didn't have to declare it on his taxes, thus unwittily owed the IRS a lot of money.
- The resulting charges meant officials above the local law enforcement were allowed to come in a cease him; these law enforcement officials could not be easily be bought/bribed by the gangster.
- Al was finally held accountable for a crime he could not get away with.
- As a result, the IRS became a infamous threat to many for its ability to take down gangsters, celebrities, politicians and religious figures who remain untouchable where all other law enforcements could not do a thing to stop corruption. Thus, out of all the crimes committable in the United States of America, tax fraud is considered the only crime an individual cannot get away with.
- As it is referencing this situation, while Velvet and Veneer may be able to get away with the events of Trolls Band Together, they cannot escape that particular charge, this is why Veneer also willingly accepts jail.
- In the finale, Rhonda makes the Wookie sound from Star Wars, the same sound Chewbacca makes at the end of episode 4, when they celebrate at the end.
- When Velvet references her and Veneer's childhood, the first fake story is based upon Oliver Twist.
- The movie makes many references to real boybands. In their departure, the Brozone references to real boy bands such as NSYNC, Boyz II Men, One Direction and the Backstreet Boys. The poster meanwhile notes the name of New Kids on the Block.
- The Vacaytioners resemble "Anything Muppets", and the Mount Rageons resemble Betty Spaghetty doll range. Both are notable for their "noodle arm" style of design for their characters.
- Velvet and Veneer are nods to fake-celebrities. This happened from time to time in the 80s and 90s, wherein people with talent were deemed not good enough to promote so their talent was used and a someone else much more marketable was taught how to pretend. The most famous example of this being Milli Vanilli.
- The chart show seen "The Bop on Top" is most likely a nod to song chart shows like the British chart show Top of the Pops.
Continuity
General
- Trolls, Trolls Holiday, Trolls World Tour and Trolls: Holiday in Harmony all occurred within the first year of the storyline. Trolls Band Together is the first storyline to take place outside that of the first year. Despite this, only a short timespan has happened since the events of the previous movies and Trolls Band Together takes place 1 month after Trolls World Tour.
- The 2D animation Trolls: TrollsTopia takes places over months, this is why 2D animations for the franchise is generally noted to be non-canon as it often contradicts the movies.
- The franchise is fond of only giving estimations for ages. This meant that prior to this movie, age estimations by fans could only be made using Poppy's notable age of 20+ from Trolls, so all ages for other Trolls were estimated based around it this only. As of this movie, Branch's age is now confirmed to be 24+, making him at no older then 23+ in the previous movies and specials and giving a second age estimation for other Trolls.
- Tiny Diamond is one month old, making him the only character so far to have an estimated age.
- Poppy didn't know Branch was in BroZone because he went by the name of "Bitty B".
- Poppy's Hug Time Bracelet she is known to wear in Trolls and Trolls World Tour is revealed to be Viva's.
- Floyd says upon meeting Branch he is more like a Trunk now. In many dubs, his name is translated to mean "Trunk" instead of "Branch".
- In Trolls, the Bergens name means "mountain", the Mount Rageons name also contains the word "Mountain", which is both the name of the place they live and like the Bergens a reference to how they appear as big as a mountain to the Trolls. The name Mount Rageons itself, "Mount" as mentioned means "mountain" and "Rageous" means "extreme anger", is a pun on "Outrageous" meaning "shockingly bad and excessive" and likely refers to their culture and how they Rageons live.
Trolls
- The movie reveals John Dory tried to return but found no one there because of The Last Trollstice.
- Branch's 'Survival Bunker' was revealed to be originally a 'Fun Bunker' for him and his brothers to live in. It was started being built 10 years before Trolls. He built it as the Survival bunker after being left alone for more then 10 years with no family.
- This movie also confirms that aside from BroZone and Rosiepuff, he had no other family members growing up, meaning that Branch grew up as an orphan with the location of their parents being lost or unknown.
- Floyd was the only one who had promised to return originally.
- Viva's separation from her family most happened when Peppy was told some Trolls were behind in Trolls, he is seen going back for Darius and others. By this time the Trolls were under attack from the Bergens who had figured out about the tunnels. Peppy notes he was calling "No Trolls Left Behind" but Viva and her Trolls were separated by a boulder. This forced Peppy to escape with the Trolls he had and force him to leave the Trolls behind that he couldn't reach.
- This story also reveals Clay was a witness to the event as he was with the Putt Putt Trolls.
- Presuming all other details are correct, Darius was the slowest member of Peppy's group and the last member of the Pop Trolls. Though non-canon, Trolls: The Junior Novelization states Darius injured his leg during the escape, so he was still able to get quite far away from the Troll Tree before the others were cut off.
- Grandma Rosiepuff, who is seen at the beginning of the moive, died before The Last Trollstice. Her death is generally one of the series indications of time since the cage around the Troll Tree is seen in Branch's flashback, which allows the placement of when BroZone broke up in the Trolls Timeline.
- During the Let's Get Married, Bridget sings part of the song Hello which she sung in Trolls.
- Viva states The Last Trollstice escape happened at night.
- For this statement to be correct, the escape would have had to occurred in the early morning while it was still dark, and was still taking place when the Bergens woke up as no night scenes were shown in Trolls during the escape, and the only night shown was later that day when Chef was banished by King Gristle Sr..
- The tunnels are long and it is possible this was the case, but otherwise would be an error.
- In addition, what was shown was according to Poppy's re-telling of the story as read from a scrapbook, thus may have inaccurate elements for this reason. The version said in this movie is based upon the eye witness accounts of Viva, Clay and King Peppy themselves. As exampled in Trolls World Tour with the recount of the Strings, Pop Trolls embellish stories.
- The Water Park sign has a Wingdingle on it, this is mentioned in Trolls and is noted in the non-canon Branch and the Cooking Catastrophe as a bird that is a hazard to both Troll and Bergen alike.
- Branch is at his grandma's pod in the introduction of the movie, and again at the same pod just before the wedding. This places the BroZone break up at the Troll Tree as thats where the Pod is in present day.
Trolls World Tour
- Floyd's is at least 2 months into captivity, meaning that he was already being held by Velvet and Veneer while the events of Trolls World Tour are occurring.
- Viva's note about Peppy liking to keep secrets in regards to her is also a reference to Trolls World Tour where he didn't tell Poppy about the other Tribes.
- John Dory calls Queen Barb's world tour The Rock Apocalypse and notes this is the only reason he found out Branch was still alive because of his involvement with it.
Trivia
- The poster shows all 5 members of BroZone with their current (adult) hairstyles. From the front to back; Floyd, John Dory, Branch, Bruce and Clay can be seen.
- This is the first time a Trolls franchise movie to:
- Not have Trolls lose colors on a massive scale.
- Have an antagonistic character redeem solo.
- This is the first Trolls film to not star James Corden as Biggie. Instead, David Fynn, who voiced the character in the television series Trolls: The Beat Goes On! and Trolls: TrollsTopia, provides his voice.
- Unlike the Bergens, currently the Vacaytioners and Velvet and Veneer's respective species were not been named by official sources. However, the latter were named Mount Rageons in the movie.
- The Palace Theatre in Gorleston played the 15 rate film "Dream Scenario" instead of Trolls Band Together by accident. This included 45 minutes of age appropriate ads, including a beheading.[101]
- The movies plot happens in 3 days and two nights.
- Poppy is never referred to by a royal title in this movie, despite being Queen of the Pop Trolls.
- This is the last Trolls movie to be made entirely by DreamWorks Animation in-house at their Glendale campus before it was reported that DreamWorks was moving away from producing films in-house to rely more heavily on outside Studios.
