Val Thundershock is a character from Trolls: TrollsTopia. According to "Follicle Fitness", her full name is Valentina Dangerskull Thundershock. She is the ambassador and local leader of the Rock Troll Tribe in TrollsTopia. Along with Demo and Blaze Powerchord, she is one of the main Rock Troll characters in the series.

She later appeared in the 3D animation Trolls: Holiday in Harmony alongside Holly Darlin', the first time characters from the 2D canon have appeared in the 3D canon.

Appearance
[]

Normal

Val is a light blue-skinned Rock Troll with purple hair with several white streaks and red eyes. Her hair is styled into two pigtails with red skull-shaped hairbands, and she has purple lipstick. She has a purple hoop earring on her left ear, and two of red and blue colors on her right, as well as a purple stud. She wears a purple skirt, a black tank top with a red heart and crossbones motif that exposes her belly button, and a black studded belt. She also has black studded bracelets, blue fingerless gloves, a black armband on her left upper arm, and a purple and red leg warmer on her left leg.

Child

In flashbacks from her childhood, Val's hair was noticeably shorter and messier, and wore a black shirt with fishnet sleeves, and two stockings of different colors (black and red for the right one, red and purple for the left). She still had the skirt, belt, lipstick, hairbands and red earring from her adult design.

Toddler

Lownote Jones, Val, and Queen Poppy turn into toddlers during "Flyer's Ed".

Normal

A brief scrapbook appearance of Val is seen in the story "Poppy's Rock Queen Transformation".

She looks much the same as her Trolls: TrollsTopia design. Due to her design, she has bigger eyes then most other Rock Trolls, though they are not nearly as big as Queen Barb's eyes. She also is the only 3D Rock Troll shown to lack the pointy ears of 3D animated Rock Trolls, most likely to keep her "look" the same as Trolls: TrollsTopia, however, she doesn't have lipstick in her mouth. They also added a red sewing line at the bottom of her black top.

Trolls: TrollsTopia[]

Val is the lead delegate from the Hard Rock Tribe. She's the embodiment of rock and roll ethos with her aggressive, energetic vitality. While most Trolls high five, Val would rather smash a guitar to show her excitement. But Val has a layer of ironic playfulness that makes her different from her rock brethren.[2]

Personality
[]

Like most Rock Trolls, she doesn't like to show any other sides of herself. She wants everything to "rock" and enjoys reckless behavior. She often acts on impulse and without thinking. She is difficult to impress, but likes to be impressed. She likes to be who she is and dislikes those who interfere with her being herself.

Val likes to maintain her edgy, rocky girl image and is reluctant to give any of it up. She doesn't like anything girly compared to some of the other female Trolls, but on rare moments can show her more open side. She will try to get out of things from time to time if she doesn't like what she's being asked to take part in. She especially struggles with anything mushy. She is finding that her time in TrollsTopia is slowly changing her, making her more open to new things, though she doesn't want to stop these changes herself as she feels it is making her a better person.

She enjoys pranking and finds it fun to throw people off by messing with them. Although she is a skilled musician and good at other talents, she does refrain from showing off at times, but likes all her stage performances to be edgy and goes to lengths to give her best. Despite being talented, she is very clumsy when it comes to hopscotch. Like her friend Petra, she is a fan of Bad Hair Day. One area she has a problem with as displayed by "The Fabyrinth" and "Flyer's Ed" is that Val sometimes cuts corners when she looses patience with something. This is because she doesn't like boring stuff.

In "The Snug-a-lug Situation", she is noted for her ability to resist hugging the most, alongside Branch, Gust Tumbleweed and Laguna Tidepool (even though it turns out that they all each hugged the Snug-a-lug after all). Like the other three Trolls, she can display arrogance (originating from her rocker-girl attitude), and thus can be overconfident.

In "Journey to the Center of TrollsTopia", Val Thundershock, Demo and Blaze Powerchord were shown to be just as unresponsible and disorganized as any other Rock Troll when they neglected to tell the other Rock Trolls to stop putting broken guitars in a pit of lava. Val has passed on the responsibility of doing so herself to Demo.

In "Be My Val In Time", Val had noted how different she was that when she met herself in the past, her past self was not impressed and believed staying in TrollsTopia would make her "soft". This almost caused Val to return to Volcano Rock City, but Val decided to give TrollsTopia a chance after she saw her future self and Poppy hugging. In the present, Val regrets that she was the Troll she had been in the past and prefers the Troll she is now.

In "Hide & Go Hug", it's stated that Val is a Troll who does take charge, and does so by showing strength with no weaknesses.

Her story arc ends in "Gal Pal Getawaycation" where it is explained that her time in TrollsTopia has resulted in permanent changes to her character.

Relationships
[]

Friends[]

Queen Poppy[]

Val took a long time to get used to Poppy due to how different the pair are to each other. Things that Poppy did that would impress Trolls of the other five Tribes didn't work for her, and some things that worked for Rock Trolls like Demo also didn't to her either. While Poppy likes Val to open up, she prefers to keep things locked away. Poppy is forced to back off of Val because of her discomfort with Poppy. It took until "Bad Hair Day" for Poppy to earn a fist pump from her, and while the pair aren't friends yet, they're on their way to becoming so.

Both Trolls are also die-hard fans of the Glitterborne Chronicles, but Val likes Madame Maelstrom, whom she thinks is the series' real heroine even though she's supposed to be main antagonist, because of her cunning, edge and dragons as Val likes Dragons. The two still freak out about the books regardless.

Like Queen Barb, Val often gives nicknames to Poppy such as "Popsqueak", many of which were given to Poppy by Barb herself. In "The Fabyrinth", Val entered the BFF Zone with Poppy and Holly as the trio grew close to each other in their time in TrollsTopia.

Val notes that by the time of "Be My Val In Time", she has changed so much that the Troll she thought Poppy was in the past no longer is the Troll she thinks of currently. Poppy is her Best friend currently and that means a lot to her, to the point she went back in time to change the fact Val had neglected to take care of the welcoming Gift Poppy gave her on the first day of TrollsTopia.

Queen Barb[]

Val was sent by Barb to Pop Village as an ambassador prior to Poppy setting up TrollsTopia. They are presumably on good terms with each other, as Val mentioned in Trolls Scrapbook Stories that she was going with Barb on her "Sorry about turning everyone into Hard Rock Zombies" tour soon after TrollsTopia was set up.

Tim Heitz confirmed that Val is one of Barb's "Besties", placing her below Carol but still high up in Barb's friendship circle.[3]

Branch[]

Due to the both of them having a serious nature, Val and Branch get along pretty well.

When Val first arrived in Pop Village, Branch instantly liked her due to her ability to throw off Poppy’s positivity.

And they both seem to have a problem regarding their slightly overconfident natures, as shown in "The Snug-a-Lug Situation", when they, along with Laguna and Gust, volunteered to babysit Lownote’s pet Snug-a-Lug because they didn’t believe it was hard to avoid hugging the irresistible creature. They even kept bragging about how easily they could do it, only to end up finding out how fiercely difficult the task truly was.

They also have great care for Poppy. The greatest example was shown in "Hair Fracture", when the two teamed up to make sure Poppy followed the doctor’s orders and stay in bed. They would even organize a Troll hunt with the Fuzzlings when Poppy escaped.

According to Jim Mortensen, if Val saw Branch and Poppy being cute together, she wouldn't find it gross, but would mock the pair for it for a while, then come to accept it later.[4]

Holly Darlin'[]

The two generally get along, but often come to misunderstandings. Val can push Holly's limits at times, causing Holly to have to reel her emotions in and force herself to not lose her temper. This was seen in "Cheery Glo-mato", when Val smashed her Cheery Glo-mato and Holly tried to keep her emotions under control. In "The Fabyrinth", Val entered the BFF Zone with Poppy and Holly as the trio grew close to each other in their time in TrollsTopia. The two clashed since both have a stubborness and temperment at times equally on par with each other. Despite their clashes of personalities, both care and support each other, as seen in "Surprise-O-Tron", where Holly admires Val's attempts to grow as a person.

Demo[]

Demo is Val's band manager and friend and she often confines in him for advice from time to time.

Petra[]

Petra was Val's best friend back home. She visited her in TrollsTopia during the episode "Bad Hair Day"; she visits her back when she shows concern over the letters Val had sent her.

Biggie & Mr. Dinkles[]

Val was paired up with Biggie (and Mr. Dinkles) in "The Buddy System" by Poppy and Branch's initial effort to get different Tribes to bond. She also ruined Mr. Dinkles's naptime lullaby by singing and playing music loudly. They got along fine, but still needed time to get to know each other.

Cloud Guy[]

In "Cloud Control", Val became a new Troll annoyed by Cloud Guy on a regular basis. Although unlike the other Trolls whom Cloud Guy also annoyed, Val doesn't appear to mind much about him and was even willing to help him pull a prank on the others.

Pets[]

Fang[]

Valandfang

Val and Fang

Fang is Val's pet snake and BPF as shown in "BPF". Val loves the snake despite it being clear that all Fang wants to do is eat her. Val mistakes all of his aggression as a sign of love.

Skills & Abilities
[]

She has most normal Troll abilities, as well as the abilities of her Tribe.

Psyche[]

Like many Rock Trolls, Val has moments of ignorance and misunderstanding. For example, in "Classical Rock", she couldn't work out why Demo was acting strange, even though Poppy was able to figure out what he was doing in seconds. It wasn't until Demo lifted his pinky finger, an act which Poppy missed; she figured out that he was spending time with the Classical Trolls. In "Cheery Glo-mato", she confuses the word "empathy" with "empanada", and due to what Poppy said about her consciousness making her imagine a Glo-mato coming after her.

This isn't always the case. Val is overall one of the most intelligent Trolls seen from her Tribe, displaying epiphany, wisdom and whit higher than most shown so far. In "Extra Tootering", her belief was that Tiny Diamond would fart glitter when the time comes, and she was accurate with her predictions. She has a high intolerance to process anything "boring", and yet is able to get in the head of others and mess with them, making them uncertain over how to deal or approach her.

Music[]

Val has her own band, which is managed by Demo. She is a talented lead vocalist, guitarist, and a musician of overall high status within the Rock Troll Tribe as a result of her talent and the habit of other Rock Trolls viewing such talent in high regards.

She is also a skilled "mouth guitarist", rivalling Blaze Powerchord but not matching his level, as no Rock Troll can. However, she doesn't like showing off her skills compared to him and was never shown with the ability to smash a guitar like he can. She is willing to teach others, as she was Minuet Sonata's instructor. While she could teach her techniques, Minuet had to learn the "instrument's" passion by herself, though Val managed to teach her this in the end.

Val struggles with being quiet, since like most Rock Trolls, she plays and sings loudly.

Val expressed a dislike of musicals in "Hair-aldine: The Musical", as she prefers performances with edge.

Valanouncervoice

Val's announcer voice is suggested to be a form of "magic"

When Val makes an introduction, her announcer's voice is heard and the words appear. In "Stop the Presses", this is suggested as a form of magic.

Games[]

Despite "Hopscotch Extreme" supposedly showing Val as an expert on the sport of Hopscotch Extreme, it also showed that she had fluked a run, and wasn't even good at the sport in any way. She can hop but not do Hopscotch Extreme, failing at the first hurdle despite "believing in herself", and noted that without skill no amount of motivation will let her do the sport.

Val has a knack for pinball, and her best move is called "Val, I don't think that's a good idea".

Vehicle Maneuver[]

In "Flyer's Ed", Val attended Lownote Jones' flying lessons. Val dreamed of flying through space, combating aliens over who rocks the hardest. The issue is that Val tried to take shortcuts during the lesson. While she aced the class using her "Val method" cheats, which allowed her to maximize her goofing off, it resulted in her only learning the core essentials to fly Vibe Town. She didn't even know the "cupholder button" as a result, and while looking for it teleported Lownote Jones away when they faced Glitteroids. Fortunately for Val (and Poppy, who was left on the ship), the flight turned out to be a simulation. Val retook the week-long lesson, but it's unknown if she has fully learnt to fly Vibe Town afterwards.

Acting[]

In "Hair-aldine: The Musical", Val had issues with acting, but this was due to her not putting any effort into it; to Val plays and musicals just aren't that interesting to her. Due to the events of the episode, she took it seriously by the end and proved that she did have what it takes to fulfill the role of Hair-aldine in Holly's musical. Val has a strong firey spirit, making her the perfect candidate for lead roles that require that type of persona.

Medical Status and Issues
[]

Val is shown to be a young Troll who is physically fit. She's normally shown to be able to be quite agile otherwise and has no problems with other physical activities.

Physical Injuries[]

Val was shown in "Hopscotch Extreme" to have "Scotcher's Knee" on her right knee, and cannot hop on that knee at all. Though her left knee was completely fine.

Trivia
[]

  • She, along with Holly Darlin', is the first known Trolls 2D animation series character to be transferred to 3D canon.
    • This further reinforces that she exists in both timelines.
  • Due to errors caused by Val's animations being mirrored, her earrings sometimes switch ears.
  • Val's surname may be a reference to the song "Thunderstruck" by the rock band AC/DC. This makes sense, given her status as a Rock Troll.
  • Val and Demo are opposites. Val is a wild rocker girl who's very reserved in her nature and hates boring stuff, while Demo is a professional Troll with a softer side who enjoys boring details. Val is also edgy and reserved while Demo is more emotional and epic.
  • Due to the fact that Poppy transformed temporarily into her father during the wormhole scene, a glimpse of Val's own father likely resembles was seen in "Flyer's Ed", alongside Lownote Jones' mother. However, because Poppy's colors were not the same as her own father's and instead were her own colors, it's likely the pairs' own parents aren't in the correct color.
