Episode Info

"What Did I Miss?" is the second segment of the 5th episode of the eighth season of Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, and the 99th overall episode in the series. It premiered on November 22, 2019.

Synopsis
[]

Poppy tells King Peppy various events of the day, sometimes casual stuff but mostly frustrating incidents.

Plot
[]

Poppy enters Maddy's saloon where her father Peppy is. He has been at the saloon all day, and thus Poppy decides to bring him up to speed with all the events that happened in the village.

She mentions the following events of the day:

  • Branch was cutting a hedge and accidentally cut a Troll's hair that looked like it was part of the hedge.
  • DJ Suki plays a record backwards of a song that Poppy sung and a creepy message is heard.
  • Sky Toronto is showing off the Hug Watch 2.0; the demonstration ends with someone asking if it still tells them when hug time ends.
  • Two young Trolls are disappointed by their plain cake until Klaus Von Frousting appears and puts frosting on the cake, cheering them up.
  • Satin asks Chenille for a sweater, she pulls it over her body and sends it through their conjoined hair to Satin. Satin tells her "not the itchy one".
  • Smidge and Milton Moss wonder what this thing between them is and where it's going. It turns out to be a Fuzzbumble heading back to the forest.
  • Cooper is falling through the sky, but is saved by Klaus, who gives him a frosting parachute.
  • Poppy and Branch go to get ice cream. The pair say "absolutely" at the same time and Keith calls jinx on them, preventing them from talking until someone says their name. In desperation, they try and get Guy to say their names. He thinks they are speechless about his presents. Cooper meanwhile thinks they want his name. Smidge and Biggie eventually get what the pair are asking for when Poppy and Branch pull out a poppy flower and a tree branch. The 4 Trolls celebrate and shout the same thing. Keith then calls jinx again, this time resulting in all four Trolls being trapped in the game.
  • Poppy accidentally includes a page from an older scrapbook of her father winning a raffle. She pulls it out and continues.
  • Poppy is at Biggie's pod, and she talks to Biggie about a picture board she found. Apparently, Mr. Dinkles has been photobombing photos again, despite promising not to do it.
  • The last event involved Biggie, Branch, Poppy and Smidge attempting to smash a piñata. However, no matter what, they couldn't smash it and retrieve the goods inside. After all their attempts, they finally pull it off only for it to rebuild itself. Sky Toronto arrives and has his staff secure the item. Apparently, it was accidentally given to them and is an unbreakable piñata; it is not suppose to be released, as tests proved that it left Trolls frustrated. He departs, giving them a present as an apology - which turns out to be a endlessly wrapped box.

Poppy and her father sign out the episode as just another day in Troll Village, and as a photo of the pair snaps, Mr. Dinkles photobombs it to the dismay of Biggie.

Trivia
[]

  • Jim Mortensen put an 14-minute uncut storyboard animatic version of this episode on Vimeo.[1][2]
    • Mortensen also mentioned that there was a gag where they had several goes at cracking, but failed to do so; the gag was cut from the episode. He talked about it when he was asked which was his least favorite episode of the show, citing it as a problem sequence of animation.[3]
  • DJ Suki's skit is a reference to supposedly hidden messages that some songs have when played backwards. This is a form of Pareidolia.
  • Sky's demo of the Hug Watch 2.0 is a nod to design and market.
    • The first nod is based on when design teams neglect to make basic designs. This is often because they spend so much time on other parts of the design that they neglect to focus effort on the product's actual functional properties. In this case, the result is that the basic function of the Hug Watch to say when Hug Time is was left out because Sky's team has focused on giving the device a multi-functional purpose.
    • The demo itself is also an example of when a company focuses on selling a product based on its strengths rather than its weaknesses. If a weakness is pointed out in a product, the company often attempts to step over or dodge the question rather than address it.
  • Klaus' running gag skit is a reference to food mascots such as Pepsiman, Kool-Aid Man or Tony the Tiger interrupting a bad situation to save the day in advertisements.
  • The unbreaking piñata at one stage is broken, but reforms. The reformation is a reference to Terminator 2, when the T-1000 robot is destroyed but reforms moments later.
  • All members of The Snack Pack appear individually in this episode, which rarely happens in episodes of Trolls: The Beat Goes On!. Most episodes in the series feature members of the group, but leave some of them out.
  • In Mr. Dinkles' photobomb skit, most of the snapshots on the picture board are screenshots taken from previous episodes, many of which have Mr. Dinkles placing himself in some way. These episodes are, in order of airing:
    • "The Party Games" (a picture of Guy Diamond & Smidge with Mr. Dinkles on the bottom right)
    • "Three Trolls-Keteers" (Mr. Dinkles at the center of the theater stage with Cooper at the left)
    • "Musical Thrones" (two pictures featuring Biggie & Mr. Dinkles falling with a chair and Biggie & Smidge doing a smug look together)
    • "Branch Bum" (Branch lying on a leaf with Mr. Dinkles on his side, another picture of Poppy and Smidge on sunglasses with Mr. Dinkles in the middle)
    • "Scrap To The Future" (a picture of Poppy and Creek during the "Time Is On My Side" song sequence with Mr. Dinkles appearing in the upper right)
    • "Blank Day" (a brief part of the Snuggle Squid's tentacles with Mr. Dinkles in front, while another image shows the pop-up Troll in Branch's Select-o-Tron with Mr. Dinkles in the middle)
    • "Haircuffed" (a picture of Branch and Creek's tied hair with Mr. Dinkles' face at the front, obscuring the latter)
    • "Marshtato Fairy" (a picture of the group of Trolls with Mr. Dinkles)
    • "Do The Biggie"
    • "Hug Fest" (the H.U.G.G. reunion concert)
    • "Giggleyum" (Mr. Dinkles in the giggleyum)
    • "A Flower For Poppy" (The Snack Pack members with Mr. Dinkles in Branch's side)
    • "Hair Ball" (Smidge & Milton Moss with Mr. Dinkles in the middle)
    • "Troll Rangers" (the photoshoot at the episode's ending with the addition of Mr. Dinkles)
  • This episode is the twelfth one in the series to feature the running gag referencing the common classic cartoon logic rule of "gravity does not work until you look down". It's also the second one in which the gag occurs twice, the first being "Scrapbookmobile".
