A Wishstone or Good Luck Gem is a reoccurring feature of Troll Dolls.

Design Origin

The first dolls with gems were known as the "Treasure Trolls", and were part of a series of Trolls with gemstones. Troll Dolls were a good luck charm, and the idea was to rub their hair for luck. Wishstone Trolls, however, had a different "charm" power, and instead the subject had to rub their gem while making a wish they wanted to come true. They were popular due to the gem being an appealing decorative feature. The gem was originally the same color as the Troll's hair, but gems of later dolls didn't always match the hair color. These Trolls were popular alongside the Rainbow Troll dolls, with some later releases of dolls combining their design aspects together. When a Troll was clothed, the gem was often moved to an ear, appearing as an earring.

Trollz design

In the Good Luck Trolls series' Trollz by DIC (now rebranded as "WildBrain"), the gems were the source of a Trollz's power, giving them a more active role in the franchises lore. When a girl was born she had a piece of special magic amber placed on her belly button. As the girl matured, her Gem would appear at some point when a girl was about 14 years old. The gems emergence was her "coming of age" event and signaled she was now ready to try and cast spells, which were contained in magic beads. Spell Phones allowed an easy way to cast magic spells. The "Boyz" amongst the Trollz did not have gems thanks to the antagonist of the series, a Gremlin named 'Simon', 3,000 years before the events of the series. Only the two male ancients, "Mr. Slate Trollheimer" and "Spinell", had magic as a result, but like all ancients their long life spans were a result of their closeness with magic and any disruption to it would risk their lives.

When DreamWorks Animation took over the licensing they had the right to produce their own dolls as they now owned the license of the dolls. They then drew inspiration from all design aspects of the franchise. These gemmed trolls became the basis for the Treasure Trolls of their own adaptation of the franchise. In addition, gems later appeared on the Classical Trolls. Poppy and Branch both had a gem and then had it removed in various stages of their development. The gems were also referred to in Trolls Holiday.

DreamWorks doesn't call these gems "Wishstones", despite this being the correct and official term in the classic '80s and '90s doll lines. DreamWorks also doesn't refer to the gems' original purpose and power, which is also the case for the Trolls' hair. For the most part, the gems are only decoration.
